What great place to get information. I have a 1978 CD 30 with an original Volvo engine. The engine sounds good and moves the boat along well. But I get white smoke which gets less dense the longer I run the engine but is still lightly visible. Also the temperature gage reads hot when motoring at higher RPMs, but drops once I back-off the RPMs or put the transmission in nutral. I am not sure, but the amount of water being discharged seems light even though I have replaced the impeller. What do you guys think. Is this a characteristic of the engine or am I looking at some major work? As always thanks for taking the time to reply.

The local Volvo Penta dealer tells me that a little white smoke is just fine. Start to worry if it is blue or black. He said that the technology available when the motor was designed/built is different than today, and we should expect some white smoke. He also said that the motor likes to be "run hard" from time to time. He said get the motor warm, run the RPM all the way up (under a load) and let it "blow" out. As far as temperature goes, I believe my manual says the engine is designed to run at 190 deg., but I'll double check that for you - the manual is on the boat. I know the "idiot light" doesn't indicate degrees, my temp gauge puts the needle about 3/4 of the way up the green scale when I am running at 2000-2500 RPM. It you are running in the red under a load but otherwise normal temp at idle I would be tempted to investigate your seawater pickup, feed hoses etc. for blockage. Also, if you have fresh water cooling, you might want to investigate the heat exchanger.
Good luck!

WHITE SMOKE
Here's some info from a diesel trouble shooting chart I have:Ken wrote: What great place to get information. I have a 1978 CD 30 with an original Volvo engine. WHITE SMOKE =
1) Air in fuel lines
2) Dirty / contaminated fuel
3) Blow by at pistons
4) Moisture or water in cylinders ( sounds like this
one may be your case )
5) Incorrect valve clearances
6) Blow by at valves ( yes white not blue )
7) Stuck decompression lever
8) Lack of cylinder lubrication
9) Sticking valve
10) Incorrect valve adjustment
11) Blown head gasket ( refer to #4 )
12) Preheater not operating correctly
Good luck to you !
