CDSOA Maine Cruise, Aug. 14-18

Please join fellow CDSOA members and CD owners for the CDSOA Maine Cruise, August 14-18.

Join Cruise Captains Cathy Monaghan and Bruce Halley, aboard the CD32 Realization, for a scenic cruise in the Casco Bay area.

The current plan (subject to change) is for Bruce and I to depart from somewhere on Cape Cod Bay (probably Provincetown, MA) between August 7th and 9th. At any rate, we hope to be heading for the Sheepscot River and Robinhood, ME and will probably anchor in Robinhood Cove where we intend to spend a couple days before heading towards Casco Bay where our first stop will be Potts Harbor on Saturday, August 12th. We'll spend both Saturday and Sunday in Potts Harbor. If we're not anchored we'll be swinging on a Dolphin Marine Services mooring. I hear the clam chowder at the Chowderhouse Restaurant is wonderful if anyone would care to meet us there for dinner.

The official start of the 'Maine Cruise' is on Monday, Aug. 14 at Great Chebeague Island. During the cruise we intend to visit the following ports:

• Mon, Aug 14 -- Great Chebeague Island
  Tue, Aug 15 -- Snow Island (Quahog Bay)
  Wed, Aug 16 -- The Basin (New Meadows River)
  Thu, Aug 17 -- Jewell Island
  Fri, Aug 18 – Falmouth Foreside, ME (contact Handy Boat Services for mooring)

Hopefully we can end the cruise with a group dinner ashore at the Falmouth Sea Grill on Friday, Aug. 18.

On Saturday Bruce and I will probably head over to Portland for a couple of days if anyone cares to join us there.

Pam and I look forward to joining the Maine cruise for at least part of the time. We're negotiating with our dog Murphy for permission to do the whole shebang.

Whisper is now on our new mooring at Handy Boat, near Can 15. We brought her up from the Chesapeake a couple of weeks ago. We left Annapolis on the 8th and cruised north to the C&D Canal, picking up Bob Loewenstein, Magdalena, at the Hammock in Bodkin Creek. Discovered that Schaefer's Canal House is out of business, but the Hole-in-the-Wall at Chesapeake City has been dredged to 10-12 feet and most of the anchorage taken up with an expanded marina. Rollicking reach up the Atlantic past New Jersey and Long Island .. 30 kts out of the SW. Overnight at Block Island. Then it was quiet ... motor sail up Buzzard's Bay, wait for the trash train to pass in the Cape Cod Canal, motor sail up the Gulf of Maine. Couple of thunderstorms.

When the CDSOA cruise reaches Handy Boat, we can provide logistic support with our Blazer.

We have a 1985 CD26 "STORNOWAY) at Falmouth Town Landing (Mooring #30) in Falmouth ME.

We cannot join for all of the Cape Dory Maine cruise as we'll have just returned from 17 days up the coast on our own vacation, if it weren't for that darn work always getting in the way of sailing! I'm not sure why my boss said I can't just take another week??!!

So, we'll try to join in for some of it where we can, but feel free to contact us if you need help locally, we'll do what we can.

Plans are starting to firm up. I thought I'd post my itinerary, just in case I may be passing by some other CD'ers on my way.

Friday, August 11 - Depart Portsmouth Harbor.
Friday evening - Overnight at Biddeford Pool. Anchoring outside the Pool.

Saturday, August 12, Depart Biddeford Pool, Lunch at Jewell Island, Overnight at Sebasco Harbor.

Sunday, August 13, Depart Sebasco, Lunch at Damariscove Island, Overnight at Poorhouse Cove (John's Bay). This is my destination (summer camp).

Tuesday, August 15 - Depart Poorhouse Cove at 0-dark-30. Join CDSOA Casco Bay cruise at Snow Island.

Wednesday, August 16 - Depart Snow Island. Gunkhole around Harpswell Sound and New Meadows River, overnight in the Basin.

I'm undecided whether I'll overnight at Jewell Island, since I would have already been there on Saturday. It would also make for a 60-mile trip back to Poorhouse Cove. I'll be day-sailing out of Poorhouse Cove to various destinations around Boothbay and Muscongus Bay until August 25th.

Hi Carl,

I'm so glad that you and the rest of the gang will be continuing with the CDSOA Maine Cruise without me and Bruce even if you'll only make it to a port or two.

On top of the fact that we have not been able to get our boat in the water (first it was the rainy weather, then an unplanned trip to FL, and now unbearable heat), I managed to injure my back during the Northeast Fleet's rendezvous on Fishers Island Sound (we drove) last weekend and I've been flat on my back since Sunday night. This is my first attempt at sitting at the computer.

If the others don't see this, please let them know that I wish you all great fun and that I am very jealous -- I was so looking forward to sailing up to Maine and seeing all of you.

In spite if my aching back, my desire to be out on the water on a lovely Cape Dory in the company of friends and new friends is stronger than my desire to sit around and do nothing (which I'm really getting bored with). Anyway, thanks to Dean Abramson, Bruce and I will be venturing up to the Casco Bay region and boarding Dean's CD31 Loda May for Wednesday thru Friday of the CDSOA's Maine Cruise. (But I'm beginning to feel sorry for Bruce who will have to carry all of our stuff -- I can barely lift my purse -- and we (that would be Bruce) always overpack.) So for once I'll be deck fluff!

We are leaving tomorrow for Ptown, then Sunday Ptown -> the Mount Desert Island region. Plan on doing Acadia for a few days, then working our way west/south. We figured on being in Tenant's Harbor or Rockland by next weekend. If you would like to hook up and do a few days after the Casco cruise with us, just let us know! (You have my cell phone # I think....)

Otherwise, hope to see some of you Maine Cape Dorians on the water over the next few weeks!

We had a wonderful 4 days (Wed. thru Sat., Aug. 16-19) sailing with Dean Abramson aboard his CD31 Loda May. We boarded on Wednesday at Falmouth Foreside and sailed immediately to The Basin on the New Meadows River where we met up with the rest of the gang participating in the CDSOA Maine Cruise and where we all went ashore and shared a potluck/BBQ dinner at the cabin of Nick and Wendy Price. Thanks Nick and Wendy, it was GREAT!

Thursday the wind was so good that rather than sailing right to our next destination, Jewell Island, we pointed Loda May's bow towards the sea and enjoyed a wonderful daysail before finally pulling into the small anchorage at Jewell. By then it was 6:30 p.m. and the little harbor was full of boats. We anchored but didn't care for our proximity to the other boats, a ledge or the depth so we hauled up the anchor and headed over to Cliff Island instead. We were the only boat there!

Friday we had good wind again and this time sailed to Falmouth Foreside via Potts Harbor where we stopped and picked up a mooring and had lunch. We passed the CD30K Heron which was leaving the harbor then the CD36 Harmony showed up and grabbed a mooring nearby. Bruce and I took Dean's dinghy over to Harmony to meet Dave and Carol Bradbury and they gave us a tour of their beautiful 36. Then it was back to Loda May and onward to Falmouth Foreside where we met up with the rest of the gang again for a group dinner at the Sea Grille which marked the end of the CDSOA Maine Cruise. The food was good, the service was great and the company was even better. We had some nice giveaway items and nobody went home emptyhanded.

Though the Maine Cruise was over, we kept sailing -- another day with the Abramsons then we were off to Rockland where we boarded the Abato's CD36 Mahalo and sailed with them for 3 days on Penobscot Bay.

A big THANK YOU to the Abramsons and the Abatos for giving us the only chance we'll have to sail anywhere this year. It was great fun and appreciated more than you know.
