What are the benefits of documenting your vessel?

The big benefit is that in time of war, the gov't can sieze your vessel. <g>
Ok... documentation provides a place where title is recorded and a buyer can have assurance that he gets good title with no hidden liens. So it makes it easier to sell/finance, particularly if you are in a state where boat's aren't titled. Also, it might make it easier to clear customs (if you sail that far). And most important, you don't have those ugly numbers on the bow!
In some cases, buyers will prefer a documented boat because they don't have to then register with their state and pay sales tax. It's illegal... pay the tax and enjoy the boat, documented or not.
I have the forms ready to go, just need to sign them and send them in.

One other question. In measuring your boat, what/how did you arrive at the D measurement that the CG requires?

I didn't. You can use D1 if D can't be determined. I measured it at 6' 9", from the deck to the bottom of the keel.
