I am planning to make a purchase w/in the next year, high on the list is a CD 28. My question for today regards transfer of documentation. What is involved, costs, etc. What will BOAT/us do? Are they needed? Thanks in advance, this is a great BB.

I did my own documentation using the Coast Guard website. All forms were available for downloading. I was able to email a human being at the center who answered all my questions quickly and competently. Address is:

http://www.uscg.mil/hq/g-m/gmhome.htm

I paid a lot of money on the other boats I've documented, but I'd never do it again. I received the document within a month of the application, which was faster than the documentation service managed it! Good luck!

I agree, the process is remarkably easy - other than trying to get the form page to print properly once you have downloaded it (at least on a Macintosh).

You should not need help with documentation if your other papers are in order. It is easier than State registration in my experience - which is not surprising since the State is mainly trying to make sure it collects its piratical taxes from you and it does not know a boat from a hole in the ground.

Many lenders require that the borrower utilize their documentation services (and pay the fees).

it is simple to do yourself. they are actually helpful if you call on the phone - (800-799-8362) maybe because they are in the boondocks of west virginia. (smell the pork?)
cost is about $75 if i recall, there are 2 or 3 simple forms to fill out and turnaround is quick- amonth or so
just a tip-make sure the bill of sale is made out to all owners on the documentation form or you have to do another form and $5 more.
