cd27 hardware question

Post by aigen »

Aloha friends,

I think my oem mainsheet fiddle block needs replacing; has anyone had good experience with any particular make and model?

Garhauer?

Post by bottomscraper »

Garhauer has a good selection of blocks. They are a bit less expensive than the Harken or Schaefer blocks. They make some nice stuff. We have a mixture of Garhauer, Harken and a few original Schaefer blocks. The Garhauer blocks are a bit bulky for some locations. Garhauer sells direct, Harken and Schaefer usually thru dealers. Here are some links:

Garhauer

Steve,

I can strongly recommend Garhauer Marine. All their stuff is high grade stainless and all their block sheaves are ball bearing. They look great and they stay looking great--no fading.

Garhauer does make lightweight aluminum body blocks as well, and I use those for my reefing luff blocks, to save weight aloft.

If you don't see what you specifically need in their web catalogue, give them a call-- the catalogue has a few gaps, and they carry or can manufacture some things that don't appear there-- backing plates, for example.

I find their prices are much more reasonable than those of the bigger brands. I suppose that's because they sell directly.

Every block you see here, including the stacked organizers and the fiddle block for the vang, is made by Garhauer. In addition, I use their double rope clutches farther aft.

Carter,

After looking at that photo I can't resist. I'll bet that string instrument plays very well.

Oh, hell, Ken, I don't know what all those ropes do. I just like the shiny metal.

Like Carter, I am a devotee of Garhauer blocks. I have many on my boat...which happens to be a CD27. The 3 blocks at the mast base, turning lines coming down from the mast, on route to the deck organizer and thence back to a triple rope clutch at the cockpit are Garhauer light blocks. They've been there 3-4 years now and they are holding up very well.

By the way, the vang in the picture is a Garhauer vang.

CD 27 - Rigid Vang

Post by Richard G. »

Warren:

How do you like the rigid vang and how difficult was it to install? How does it look? Is it in keeping with the tradditional look of the boat? I have been interested in it for a while for my CD 27.

Thanks,

Richard,

Actually I have a boomkicker and a standard vang with it.
The boomkicker holds the boom up and it allowed me to get rid of the topping lift...which always was a nuisance.

I didn't install the boomkicker myself because I didn't have the time. I let the yard do it but I can tell you its an easy job.

I think if I had it to do over again I'd get a Garhauer rigid vang. Still, the boomkicker is an improvement over the topping lift in my opinion and a true rigid vang would be even better.
