Volvo M2db, is it dead?

Post by Tom Young »

Has anyone experience with the m2db finally giving up the ghost? Symptoms, running fine previously(for the last 13 years), begins to lose power, oil light comes on. Shut it down and check oil, all fine there, start it up and it begins to make a metal to metal sound(this can't be good) Any advice on how to check for nature of problem? Could this be a main bearing? Not frozen, but turning wheel by hand makes scraping sound inside.
Does the fuel pump ever give problems? The oil indicator may not be honest as the alternator light came on as well.
Any experience would be appreciated. Will probably end up repowering this winter if it is gone. Anyone rebuild the volvo, what repowers have worked well in the CD 28. Thanks alot, still sailing.

Tom,

I doubt that it is so bad that a replacement is needed. Have you checked the k$$$ that are needed for this? You are talking the best part of $8500 to do this. ~$6.5k for an engine and the engineering to machine a personality plate to mate your transmission with the replacement engine. Then you have the labor to pull it and reinstall it, plus crane charges etc.

I rebuilt our MD7B 2 years ago now, and it cost all total, $2500. They replaced everything..rings (I suspect that this is the noise you hear), bearings, valves, valve guides, new injectors, rebuilt the inj. pump, new oil pump, water pump, ball valves and springs etc.etc. It now starts on the 1st. compression stroke, even after sitting two weeks.

I think what may have happened was that you did run low on oil due to an oil pump failure or something in that path. The rings lose their lube, and freeze and then break. When the engine is rotated, you will hear these loose pieces rattling around on the top of the engine.
If this happened, the cylinders are scored, the rings broken, and the valve shafts probably bent from the debris.
Get a mechanic that is well-known for his marine diesel skills (I mean it..it's well worth it to do a search for the right mechanic). Have them listen to the sounds and see what they have to say.
I would think that you will be able to repower using the same engine core, for under 1/2 what you will pay for a replacement engine.

i am far from expert, but a spun main bearing may be the culprit. you have to pull the engine no matter what, and an autopsy will show the problem. just my experience from car engines, but when it makes that noise, less than a full teardown is a poor economy.
good luck. that type of thing always gives a terribly sick feeling in my gut.
