Question about bracket holding bottom of rudder on 19 ft

Post by glennprentice »

Hi,

I have a 19 foot Weekender. The bottom of the rudder goes into a bracket. The bracket is covered with fiberglass. In my case, much of the fiberglass is gone.

My questions are:

1) Should I build back up the fiberglass, or should the bracket be exposed?

2) If I build it back up, how do I adhere it to the bracket, so that water doesn't get it?

3) How do I remove the rudder, if I need to work on it?

I'm completely new to all of this. I appreciate your help,

Glenn

QUESTION ON GUDGEON AND PINTLE

Post by Oswego John »

Hi Glenn,

There is much to be said concerning your questions. The best way to find out what is involved is to search the archives. Archives are a literal treasure trove of information for all sorts of boating info and repairs.

I just gave a brief check of the archives and came across the following:

Rudder - - 986 entries

Rudder and tiller - - 240 entries

Rudder Pintle - - 34 entries

Gudgeon - - 61 entries

Seek out the gudgeon or pintle first to zero in on your questions.

On top of the home page on the left, click "search".
On "Search Query", type in key word ,ie "gudgeon".
Scroll down and click "Search".

Good luck hunting for info. If there are any details you don't seem to find, ask the board and expect results.

Best wishes,
O J
