Typhoon Outboard

Post by Stephen »

Hi,

I'm about to purchase an outboard for my Typhoon. Think I'm going to get a Nissan 3.5hp longshaft. Anyone have any opinions or advice on this. Would appreciate the info.

Thanks, Stephen

Good choice. I think that 3hp is about right for a Typhoon when you balance power vs. weight. I've found that the best way to keep these engines going is to run them regularly and maintain (winterize) them properly. And use a gas stabilizer.

I have a 2.5 hp Evenrude that I believe is a little under powered for the boat when the wind is up or I am in boat wakes. The shaft is also short which causes the prop to break the surface in choppy conditions.

3.5 HP sounds about right for most instances. It may seem a bit anemic when punching into a chop with a stiff breeze (heck, you oughta be sailin' anyway). We have a 4.5 hp Evinrude which is quite adequate, but HEAVY. If I were replacing the motor, I'd seriously consider a light-weight 3.5 hp motor. It would help the boat's trim and be easier to mount/remove.
