Like new teak! and a question about ToughShield over fresh t

Post by D. Stump, Hanalei »

I had all the teak on Hanalei sanded last week. Went down Saturday d and applied oil to all that newly exposed wood. She looks absolutely great! I oiled it to protect it until I get time to apply the ToughShield system to it. Or, until the temperature and humidity drop to something less than what one could expect in Atlanta , GA (we're in Noank, CT)! The question is, "How long should I wait until I apply the ToughShield?" The oil was sucked right into the wood! I would think that a week or so in the sun would be sufficient. What do you all think? Thanks for any suggestions..,....

Dave:
I would think a week or two would be sufficient, however you may want to give the folks at the Wooden Boat Shop in Seattle, WA a call (206)634-3600. I ordered my ToughShield products from them (I live in Greenwich, CT) and they were very helpful regarding application, etc. I refinished the teak on my CD 36( "Jazman", #68) last year using three coats of "Base" and three coats of "Top". So far, I think it is the best stuff I have ever used (and I think I have used them all, including Cetol.) Make sure yopu use the appropriate thinner to thin out at least the first coat of "Base". Also I lightly sanded the last coat of base before applying the first coat of "Top". Follow the instructions carefully and I think you will pleased with the result. It still doesn't replace the look of varnish, but with 3-4 coats of "top" it comes damn close. Great color, too.

(1) How tough is it to touch up when someone dings your toe rail? (2) What is the ongoing maintenance commitment? (3) How hard is it to remove if you decide you DON'T like it? (Or because you failed to live up to the previously mentioned maintenance commitment, and now need to start from scratch?)
