How do you measure a prop?

Post by Ryan Turner »

I'll be hauling my CD33 in a couple of weeks to do some work. I'd like to determine what type of propeller I've got at the time. How do you do this?

Ryan:

The size, pitch and manufacturer of the prop should be stamped on the outside of the collar (my uninformed terminology for the part that the shaft goes through). On mine, it was a little hard to read due to mild corrosion, so I took some bronze wool and scuffed it up. The numbers then became quite legible.

The first number stamped there represents the diameter of the prop in inches. The second number (after the "X") represents the pitch or amount of twist in the blades. After that will be either "RH" or "LH" meaning either right hand or left hand depending upon which way your prop shaft turns. If you increase the diameter you must reduce the pitch the same amount.
