bottom paint removal

Post by andy »

Its time to strip the bottom of several layers of paint.

At the yard several people suggested "peel-away" but no one here has used it.

Anyone have experience good or bad with the product?

Also it seems to come in many varieties, any suggestions?

Thanks

peel-away

Post by Steve Darwin »

Andy,

Responding to you post of some weeks ago.

I used Peel-Away on the painted topsides of an old Bull's-Eye and it worked very well. It has the consistency of dry-wall "mud," and is spread with a spatula. After an area is covered with about 1/4 inch of the stuff, you apply a waterproof paper, which keeps the compound wet for several hours while it "works." I spread it rather thin, getting more coverage, but ran out of the covering paper; plastic food-wrap worked just as well. After an over-night "soak," the peel-away and all the paint - and I mean all ten or so coats of enamel - wiped right off. Rinse the hull afterward with a vinegar solution to neutralize the surface. I'm not sure, but I think the active ingredient in the peel-away is lye. Friendly to fiberglass. A friend "peeled" the bottom of her boat with great success: no bottom-paint dust from sanding or scraping.
