All,

Thanks to everyone on the board during my search for my very own CD. After looking at several CDs, and bidding on two, I have been informed that my bid for "Wings of Morning", a 1979 CD30, hull # 117 was accepted. She is currently in Carabelle, FL, and her first passage under my ownership will be to her new home birth in Houston, TX.

To this end, I need some recommendations for (1) a good surveyor in or around Carabelle, FL and (2) a good skipper to help me on this passage home.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again to all for past help in my search!

Glad to know you are a proud CD owner. What is your time-frame to bring her over to Houston?

Also, what Houston marina will you be using? Isn't "Balance Sheet" at Watergate?

Love at first site

My surveyor said:

"Don't fall in love with her yet..... Your journey may be beginning and maybe not."

Many people have found what they thought were perfect boats only to find out many problems with them an bought it "ANYWAY". Then costs them many boat units to get it fixed up.

Mike - I will be staying on dock 13; I really like the location with the pool and the clubhouse right there. I called the office, and there are a couple of 30' slips open farther out on the pier. A buddy of mine will be buying "Balance Sheet" from me, and keeping the slip, so it works out perfectly. I am going to try to schedule the survey for the 23rd, and hopefully close on her shortly after. I hope to make the trip back here around mid June, prior to hurricane season and the heat really kicking in...

Steve - Thanks, I know it. I am hoping that she will pass with flying colors; "Wings of Morning" (I have to rename her) had a survey in January of 05, of which I have a copy, and the surveyor commented, "Said surveyor is impressed with the new like condition of this vessel". She has had pretty much every system replaced or overhauled in 2002-2003. I am just hoping the current owner kept things up in the past year, which, given the condition prior, shouldn't be too much of a stretch. I should know by the end of the month though!

Good point, Steve.

The idea is even when you fall in love with the boat, use the survey to renegotate the price so the boat units are paid for by the seller. You get the boat plus keep the $$$ you need to get it back in tip top condition.

Kent,

In March I did the opposite trip, bought my CD30 in Houston and brought it home to Pensacola. I have also done the Pensacola to Carabelle run several times. Let me know if I can help you in any way.

Congratulations, Kent. Hope the survey goes well.

Are you planning to bring her back across the Gulf or through the Ditch?

Sounds like you got a beauty

Kent,

At this point it looks like you've got a real beauty on your hands. What an exciting first trip you've got planned. I spend time in Venice, Fl and when I watch the sail boats head out due west it really starts the imagination.

Keep us all posted on your progress and welcome to the CD family in short order).

Kent,

Looking back at your original message I was not sure whether you want to hire a licensed captain to deliver your boat (and you could crew). If so, there is one here in Clear Lake area that has delivered several Cape Dorys. I and others can recommend Captain Bill Olsen. If interested, just PM me for his contact info.

Thanks for the congratulations. I have the survey set for Tuesday at 10am, and Steve Kuhar, from this group, has graciously agreed to look her over with me. I am quite anxious to look her over. I will take a bunch of pictures and post a report next week!

As for my route back to Houston - I don't know. My original instinct was to head directly across, which is still my preferred route due to time. I have also thought about taking the ICW, and breaking the trip up into several legs, returning to work in between. This is less ideal, as I don't fancy leaving my new boat in a strange harbor during hurricane season. And of course, I could take the easy and less fun way and just put her on a truck. I just received a quote for $2,100 for the haul, which isn't too bad.

Any thoughts out there regarding best routes across?

Truck it

Post by jdhunter »

Given the cost of flying you and crew around, buying provissions, fuel and stuff that will break along the way, I would beg you to consider putting it on a truck and hauling it here over a couple of days. I've done that crossing several times. You just can't predict what will happen after you cast your lines. Plus the amount of construction on damaged rigs off the Mississippi delta is staggering. We'll help you commission her when she arrives. We might even sail along side when you do your shake down cruise.

I think I can keep up with your boat in my Typhoon, but I'm not sure about the rest of the Gulf Coast fleet. They seem to be sluggish

surveyors

Post by Leonard Lookner »

I think it best not to let the broker recommend the surveyor. Make sure that you do sea trials with the surveyor and have the surveyor comment on the contract for the boat especially if there is any contingency holdbacks. The surveyor probably will not look at the sails so it might be best if you have a local sailmaker examine them and comment or mend them while in the current owners care. Buying it in Florida could save you the sales tax. I don't know if Texas has one but it can be quite a shock. Have the boat taken out of the water being left in year round in warm water can create some nasty and expensive bottom conditions. Make sure that you check the sea cocks for wear and electrolysis.

JD and Chuck,
Thanks for the advice and welcome. I think I have pretty much decided to haul her; the logistics seem to be a pain in the @#$ to do the crossing given my time constraints. I am looking quite forward to joining the CD Gulf Fleet. And once she is in her new home here, I would welcome any and all company on her "maiden" sail! Perhaps a Redfish Island raftup?

Leonard,
I chose a broker off the BoatUS site, Capt. James Avery, out of Destin. I hope to do the sea trial with him, along with another member of this board, Steve Kuhar, who has kindly agreed to meet me in Carabelle to inspect her. Great thought about the sailmaker, I think I will make some calls to see if I can get someone to look at them while I am there.
