Typhoon transom/naming assistance

Post by Jonathan Handelman »

Hello everyone,

I just visited my Typhoon prior to launching next weekend (or next next weekend) and I completely forgot to take measurements of the transom for a new name (Cupcake). The current name (Serenity) is painted on so I will be happy to hear any advice for removing that from the transom. (Last fall I barely made a dent with the typical host of solvents...should I use a heat gun and a scraper?)

Anyway, could someone tell me how wide the transom of a Typhoon is above the waterline and how much height I will have for the letters? Better still, if you could post pictures of your boat's stern and tell me the length and width of the lettering you have, I will have an idea what dimensions I have to work with when I go to get the decals made for the new name.

Thanks,

-Jonathan

Typhoon Transom

Post by Oswego John »

Hi Jonathan,

I could very well be wrong on this, but I think that someone on the board once said that they removed old painted on letters with Easy-Off oven cleaner.

Here are the transom dimensions for my 1969 Typhoon. First off, the transom doesn't touch the water line. The bottom of the transom sits five inches above the boot top.

There is a cant or rake of the transom, the upper edge being aft of the lower by 7 3/4". From upper transom edge to the lower measures 17".

About midway up on the transom, the widest part, it measures 48" across. Above that point is the slightest bit of tumblehome, no more than an inch.

I have no lettering on my transom, so I can't help you out on letter size. As far as sending you a picture of my transom, I haven't the faintest clue on how to do it. Perhaps someone else can oblige you on that point.

Good luck on your project,
O J

Easy Off oven cleaner has been mentioned many times. I successfully removed a painted on name with rubbing compound.

Name removal

Post by Gary M »

If my tired memory serves me correctly, the last time I removed a name I used very fine wet dry sandpaper to get most of the paint off then paint thinner to get the rest.

Porous gelcoat/Name removal

Post by bhartley »

I would recommend as much heat gun (on low), scraping (very carefully) or sanding as is practical before using any chemical solvents if your gelcoat is at all porous (as most boats of this age are).

We removed a name in blue paint with acetone. Came off instantly BUT there's a blue cast to every nasty little pore on the transom that won't come off.

I've had good success using Easy Off to remove a painted name. It took a Scotch Brite pad and a lot of elbow grease, but the results were clean. It's essential that you use eye and skin protection as well as a mask or respirator when using that stuff. No joke.

Vinyl graphics will come off with a heat gun or hair dryer.

Best regards,
Carter

Easy Off

Post by Jonathan Handelman »

Thanks for the advice everyone. It looks like Easy Off is the way to go. If that doesn't do it, I will resort to wet sanding.
