We have had a substantial amount of steady rain in my area for the past several days. I thought that this would be a good time to see how dry my new CD 28 is. I first noticed several drops of water coming from the edge of the moulded cabin ceiling in the V-berth area. I then opened the door to the anchor well and found that my rhode was completely soaked and quite a bit of water on the ceiling of this area (due to condensation from the rhode I think). I suspect that the drops of water in the V-berth area originated from the anchor well - but not certain. There is a round bronze cover for the hole leading into the well from topside. It is obvious that much water is entering from here. I may have some re-bedding work to do also but it is clear that water is coming in through this hole which is for the rhode and chain. Do I have this hole covered properly or am I missing some other part besides the topside cover? It seems to me that there must be something else to keep water from entering the well via this hole. I can't believe that water should be coming in each time it rains. All info appreciated & thanks in advance.

Check your stanchion bases, which may be leaking.

The only part is the bronze cover. Yes, it lets water in, particularly in a driving rain. You can keep it closed up with a plastic bag or whatever to seal up the opening. In any case, what water comes in will drain into the bilge.
Where do you sail??

Thanks for the response. I will take your advice and check the stanchions - what type of caulking do you use to re-bed stanchions? I also need to reapply caulking to the rudder post where it meets the wood cover and where the cover meets the cockpit floor. Do I use the same caulking here also?
I am located in South Carolina (lake Keowee). It is not the sea, but it is a beautiful place and close to our house thus enabling us to spend more time on the boat.

Ask at your marine store... avoid anything that's permanent and/or won't dry to a flexible seal.

Some water through the rudder post when motoring is normal.

I was able to find a cork the same size as the hause hole. I mounted the cork to the under side of the bronze cover and notched out an area just big enough for the chain to pass through when its in use. When I'm not using the anchor or when heavy rain is expected or I'm washing down the deck, I remove the chain from the anchor and hang it from the hook on the bottom of the bronze cover. Then I rotate the cover so the notch is not exposed, giving me a tight seal to the anchor locker. It's an easy fix and it works! The tough part is finding the right size cork.mac taylor wrote: Do I have this hole covered properly or am I missing some other part besides the topside cover?
