Typhoon Sail Measurements

Post by Bob Mial »

I'm ordering some new sails for my Ty Weekender #158. The originals from Murphy and Nye measure: (main) 21.5' luff, 22.75' leach, 8.5' foot and (working jib) 19.3'', 17.7', and 7.25'. Standard Ty sails from Lee or the Sail Warehouse have differing measurements. Does anyone know what the actual dimensions (of the sail itself) should be? I've searched the archives and haven't found anything helpful.

Is there a downside to using the old sails' measurements as a pattern?

Any help on ordering some new sails would be appreciated.

See Manual Online

You can find these dimensions in the 1981 manual that's online on this site. Go to "Cape Dorys", then "Typhoon", then "manual". Also, sailmakers usually have access to these dimensions, as well. I had sails made for my Ty daysailer at KappaSails.com in Westbrook, CT, and I know they have them.
