Mysterious TYPE "A" trannie fluid - Where to get it???

Post by Mac Taylor »

I am still trying to find type A trannie fluid, but having no luck. The manual says not to mix type A with dextron II.The fluid level is low and I need to know what type to add - what to do, what to do?? I'm still not completely sure which type is in the trannie at present. I checked the fluid last time at the boat and I don't think that it is the dextron - the color was not red (albeit I could be wrong, will check again to be sure). What color is type 'A'??? These simple questions are a bit difficult for me as the previous owner has died thus I could not get an answer to many of the basis questions one has when purchasing a new boat. **I'm sure I will have many more so thanks in advance for your patients. My boat is a CD 28 1984.

Mac I assume your transmission is a Hurth. It does indeed use a type 11 Fluid but not the so called Ford type. I buy mine from the dealer who sold me the transmission to be sure to get the proper type. He explained that the Ford type will not stand up to the heat range, and will break down, and turn black. The color you find now could be due to wrong fluid? They all start out red. There are various brands covering both types, which is why I buy from the dealer only. Most parts stores don't appreciated the difference, and will sell you what they stock. Under heavy use, the wrong fluid could do much harm. The last I bought was under a Quaker State label, but there are probably others that will work. Good sailing Ron Brassord LHP FL

Ron,

Thanks for the tip. I think that I am going to drain the existing fluid from the trans., and go with the dextron II. I have the manual and it says that one can either use type 'A' or dextron II. However, on the top of my trans. there is a label that says use only type 'A'. This is the reason for my confusion. Nevertheless, I think that I will drain, clean with dextron II, drain again, and then refil with dextron II again. This method should clear out any of the old stuff that is in the trans. at present. Do you agree with this idea?

Thanks,

I've got a hurth transmission on my Universal 5424. My manual also calls for type A fluid. When I checked into this I found that type A fluid is no longer made. Dextron II takes its place and works fine. Your plan sounds good to me.
