CD25 Transport Damage

Post by Don Kolenda »

Help. Transported our 1974 CD25 (hull #076) from Chicago to Ft.Myers. Companionway hood / sliding hatch came off and was trashed on the highway. Any ideas on replacement sources or alternatives. Yard out here is saying BIG dollars to make up mold, etc. to refabricate from scratch without some much as a drawing or one to look at. Any thoughts greatly appreciated asap as the boat is burning dollars sitting in expensive yard before I can get it in water and to our new home.

Don:

Sorry to hear about the mishap. Was there a common carrier involved, or were you towing it? If common carrier was involved, they may be liable to fix it for you. You may also be covered under your boat or auto insurance. Definitely submit the claim and see what response you get.

Were the hood and slider recovered? You might find that repairs to them and reinstallation may be a more economical alternative than refabrication.

If refab is the only way, you may do better to find a skilled 'glass person to make it in his garage. I know that there is at least one retired fellow in my club (in NY) who helps alot of members with glass problems. Ask around. Guys like that are all around, and may be skilled enough to do the job. Also, you might find a yard employee who would be happy to have the work in his garage and you might save alot. You might even find a benificent Florida CD25 owner on this site (who's been thinking about rebedding the hood anyway) who'd lend you his hood and slider to make a mold!

You might consider making a temporary cover out of plywood so you can get the boat home while you consider your options.

As requested, just some thoughts.

Don,

Octavia Marine had the molds for the CD25D. Unfortunately, they've gone out of business. Their old contact information is:

Octavia Marine
P.O. Box 366
Mays Landing, NJ 08330
(609) 625-6636

You never know, there may be someone around that knows what happened to the molds after they went bust.

Hopefully there's enough left of your old hatch and seahood to repair.

Good luck.

Ironically I remember a post on this board some time ago regarding the deficiency of the CD 25 companionway hatch when the boat is towed at highway speed. I know the feeling as a 100 mph tornado like storm ripped my Sea Sprite hatch off a year ago. The boat is moored on the river and I felt recovery was doubtful and was mentally researching replacement alternatives. Fortunately my local underwater recovery team thought the recovery of my hatch was a sufficient reason to hold a recovery drill! Anyway....my thought was along the carpentry lines. If your hatch is similar.....it has an arch to it? That rules out flat plywood. A skilled carpenter should have no problem fabricating something. Luckily the CD 25 is not so scarce.....so hopefully someone on this board is near enough to you so that you can inspect his hatch. The end result if done well will make you the envy of all Cape Dory owners.

Don

I dont know how skilled you are with your hands, but Daniel Spurr's book "Upgrading the Cruising Sailboat" has a detailed description of building a sea hood from scratch. Even if you arent skilled enough, it would help someone how is!

Hope you get her fix soon and check out the insurance route as someone else suggested.

I reported the same incident on this site almost 2 years ago. While bringing my boat from Chicago to PA, I had not realized the seahood had come off until I stopped for the 2 hour checkup. FORTUNATELY mine had caught in the spiderweb of tie down ropes we had in place. I felt that I had been very lucky it had not hit another auto and possibly killed someone! We subsequently tore our boat down to the bare hull for the rebuild/ upgrade and this was the only area we felt was substandard. BUT this sea hood attachment is really an accident waiting to happen. Mine was only held in place by a very few #6 SHORT screws and a bit of sealer. There is a CD28 in our marina. He checked his and discovered a similar situation. (Look on top of the seahood. If you see some small stainless screws in the seahood flange, remove one. You may find that they are very short and do not reach deeply into something solid.) I made major changes in mine to insure the hood would stay in place and urge others to have their hoods checked. It is not impossible to have winds at sea equal to the 55 MPH highway "blow". Loss of this hood at sea in a storm would very likely sink the boat.
I don't know how much the yard wants to make a replacement but this hood is not very complicated and a competent 'glass worker could make a replacement without much problem.

hatch/sea hood molds

Post by Matt Cawthorne »

Don,
If this happened to me I would try and find another CD-25 owner and convince that person to allow you to make molds from their boat. To do that you would want to remove their sea hood and hatch. The original parts would be thoroughly waxed and then a 1-sided mold could be cast from them. You would then be eternally grateful and help them re-bed their sea hood. Exactly what you would have to offer someone to let you do this depends on the person.

Basic fiberglass work is not hard, and if you had the mold you could make one as good as the original. In the event you wanted to upgrade to a larger Cape Dory some day you would not have to explain to the buyer of your boat about why you have a non-factory arrangement.

Good luck,
Matt
