sailcloth

Post by John MacArthur »

Does anyone know of an unbiased source of information (not salespeople)about American sailcloths (Bainbridge, Dimension, and Challenge), and how they compare with each other and with the Asian cloths? I'm pricing a new suit of sails for Stork, and am get a wide variety of what I assume to be misinformation (e.g. "the Asian cloth is garbage"), as well as prices. I'm not looking for cheap sails, but want a good sail shape, finish quality, and longevity. Are the Asian sailcloths (like Neil Pryde uses) really "garbage"? Does anyone have a relatively complete index of "Practical Sailor" that might show if they have a back issue that might discuss some of this? Thanks in advance for any leads.

John,

I have a marine canvas business in houston and also have accounts with the manufactures that youlisted and have some working knowledge of their clothes. I can also give you the actual prices for the cloth. this can give you a better chance at bargining for the price of the sail. If needed I can order cloth and have it shipped in with one of my other shipments. Drop me an e-mail and list your questions and i will respond the best that I can.

I'm on my third season with a Neil Pryde sail and am happy with it. Can't say what will happen over ten years, but I trust my sailmaker... he wouldn't sell it if he didn't like the quality.

Turns out Neil Pryde uses Challenge cloth, and not the asian cloth. I found this out from several sources. I will be using them again.
