Anchor rode

Post by Mike Rodriguez »

Hi Everyone,

I'm looking to replace my anchor rode and I noticed an ad for something called "Brait" in a sail magazine.
It's supposed to be stronger and resist chafing better than regular three strand nylon and stores in less space. Has anyone tried this product or know any pros & cons?

Mike:

Brait is nice stuff. I just did a few chain to rope splices with the Yale eight strand brait.Image

It is coils very neatly and compactly, doesn't kink up like three strand and most windlass manufacturers suggest using it for their combination chain/rope gypsies. If you don't have a windlass, it is wonderfully soft on the hands. If I was going to redo my rode or add a second one, I would definitely get brait.

It's not too hard to splice either. I got a 30 foot length for my stopper/spring line and will find out this spring how it stretches.

Sail on.

does anyone have a suggestion on what type of chain to get and where? West Marine seems so expensive. But the chain I bought last year at the local Home Depot is already rusting.

thanks

Hot dip galvanized, grade 30, proof coil. You might could also try doing a search in archives.
