rudder removal

Post by Ron Polichnowski »

My CD 25 is presently in the boat yard having repairs done. The rudder needs be be removed and rebuilt. No one is quite sure how to release the rudder post to remove the rudder.

Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks

This is how you would remove the rudder and post from a CD26... First, remove the lower rudder bearing, then the tiller headstock and finally drop the rudder and post out of the boat.
To remove the lower bronze bearing, sand away all the bottom paint and whatever else is covering the fitting. Then, find the thru bolts or screws securing the fitting to the aft end of the keel and remove the fasteners. The bearing can then be removed from the keel.
the boat will have to be a fair distance up off the ground to allow the rudder and post to drop out...or you can dig a hole beneath the rudder to obtain the needed clearance...hopes this helps
