Anyone done this? Looking at the bow platform, inner forestay fitting, and staysail club, I'm not sure where/if I can put a windlass on. I'd like to use a manual with two chain gypsys, one into each side of the locker, but it doesn't look possible. Ideas?
Thanks, Bill

Re: Windlass on CD 36 Cutter
Bill,
On my old 1979 CD 36, hull #23, I had a manual S-L SeaTiger windlass mounted on the bowsprit teak right in front of the interstay mounting hardware. The hawse pipe went through the bowsprit, deck and into the starboard chain locker. Worked OK.
There is a late model CD36 on my dock today that mounted a vertical axis electric windlass directly on the fore deck right behind the bowsprit. Because of its low profile, it does not interfere with the interstay and the staysail club. It is a super installation. He put a stainless protection strip over the teak to protect it as the chain was pulled aft. I have not been below to see how it drops into the chain locker.

Re: Windlass on CD 36 Cutter
Bill, I have a 1988 CD 36 and recently installed a MAXWELL vertical electric through the deck into the chain locker. It is located just aft and to starboard of the bowsprit raised off the deck about 3/4" with plastic. The chain drops from the windlass through the existing chain fitting. I have fitted a 4" ss strip on the bowsprit to protect the teak from the chain. 80 feet of chain, 300 feet of line. I lead the line into the port side of the locker as the chain falls and stacks better by itself. I recommend electric over manual. Your back will thank you for it.
