I'm a proud new owner of 1978 CD27. During commissioning, I noticed that the 3 bladed prop (presumably an upgrade?) had no zinc.
Unlike all those anemic fin keelers, there is no length of shaft to put the "donut" type of zinc on; the prop sprouts right out of the back of the keel
I went so far as to order the correct sized prop "nut" zinc from West, but when I went to install it, there was not enough clearance near the rudder!
Any owners out there face the same problem? Solutions?

CD27 Prop Zinc - Where to put it?

Re: CD27 Prop Zinc - Where to put it?
It is important that you NOT fit a shaft collar type zinc forward of the prop. There is insufficent clearance to provide water flow to the cutlass bearing if a collar is mounted there. You need to use a Perry nut or similar "bullet" shaped zinc which mounts aft of the prop (this type of zinc has an internal nut which holds the prop on the shaft).
West Marine has the right stuff. Perry is in California. Someone else may know their address.

Had the same problem with my 1982 CD27 Lady Jane. The West Marine prop nut or the Perrynut zinc will both work but you have to grind the aft end of the zinc down to clear the rudder.Jeff Schmoyer wrote: I'm a proud new owner of 1978 CD27. C.E. Beckman in Fall River, MA has the Perry Nuts in stock.
There was quite a discussion on the subject about a year ago. Use the search feature to pull up all the messages with Perry Nut. If I remember correctly all the contact information is there.

Oops. I put a donut zinc just forward of the prop. There was about 1/4 in clearance. Seems like it's working fine. How can I tell if there isn't enough water getting in there?

Don't know how to measure the flow, but I have been told that the long term effect is reduced life for the cutlass bearing.

Re: CD27 Prop Zinc - Where to put it?
I have a CD-27 with std factory prop and put a zinc donut on it with no trouble. You can buy them from West, but I made mine by sawing an egg shaped zinc down to about 3/4" thickness. I wonder if your shaft wasn't shortened to make room for a larger prop?Jeff Schmoyer wrote: I'm a proud new owner of 1978 CD27.
