Has Anyone Ever Seen a Ty Daysailor Like the one in GOB?
Has anyone ever seen a TY daysailor like the one in the Good Old Boat article?
T
For those that haven't seen it, the TY Daysailor in Sandys article is a Typhoon 18, with some startling differences like a molded in fiberglass coaming all the way around. The mast sits in the cockpit, on top of the keel, instead of on a cabin roof or support. The cockpit benches are teak instead of fiberglass.
There is a photo of a 'daysailor' on one of the Forsale internet places. That Typhoon has some kind of short 'cabin roof' as best I can describe it, that just provides a mast support, likely at the same height that a Ty Weekender might be. It also has teak 'coamings' (Is that the right word?) along the cockpit.
I don't remember what the cockpit benches were.
Interesting variations of the Daysailor!
I really love the look of Sandy's Daysailor with the fiberglass coaming and the mast sitting on the cockpit deck. I like the openess of the cockpit for daysailing it still has the beautiful Alberg lines of the Typhoon.
Does anyone know if a Daysailor like this for sale?
Thanks, Scott in Minnesota, Brrrrrrrr.

See Specs Page
Scott, in case you haven't seen them, different typhoons are pictured on this site -- click on "Cape Dorys" at the top of the page, then "Specifications", then "Typhoon". Scroll to the bottom of that page. I don't think too many daysailers of any type were built, so the all-fiberglass one you prefer will most likely be hard to find. When new, the daysailers were very expensive relative to the weekender, which most people found to be more boat for the money. However, daysailers have deep cockpits (they are not self-bailing), which makes them very secure and comfortable, as well as beautiful. If you daysail, it's hard to find a nicer boat in my opinion.

Saw one once
Scott,
Many years ago, I was somewhere near Hilton Head SC, and I wanted to rent a boat for a few hours, and the place had Typhoons! I was surprised. I remember I had a choice of the Weekender or the Daysailer.
I chose the former, mainly because I had almost bought one once, and wanted to sail one. but I saw the other one(s?).
I have given you just enough info (sorry, that's all I have), for you to go to Google and start a longshot search! Brew coffee.

Pinky Hammond, a CDSOA member and Wickford, R.I. Yacht Club member has a very nice Typhoon Daysailer similar to the one in GOB. We saw it last summer while there for a mini-rendezvous, and hope to see it again this summer for another.

Ty Daysailers
Scott,
There's a sailing school up in Menemsha Pond on Martha's Vineyard that mainly uses Daysailers to teach sailing on all levels.
Think spring,

I was told that about 10% of the Typhoons were configured as daysailors, one of three configurations (weekender and standard being the other two). The Rappahannock River Yacht Club annually hosts what has been called the "Typhoon Worlds". Their members race as fine a collection of Typhoons as you are likely to see.

Rappahannock River
Hi Mitchell and all,
It's highly coincidential that you should mention the Rappahannock River, what with today being the President's Day celebration.
For many years, there has been a story making the rounds that George Washington once threw a silver dollar across the Potomac River.
This story has been refuted to be in error. It has been determined that it was the Rappahannock River that he threw the dollar across.
This feat can't be done today. Why, you might ask?
Scroll down
and find out why.
You see, a dollar doesn't go as far today as it once did.
Do I hear someone groaning?
O J (sorry)

Thanks Guys for the Tips and Leads on the DaySailor
It struck me last night what made Sandy's Typhoon daysailor jump out at me. I've been looking at catboats like the Marshall Sanderling, Herreshoff America. I like the look and feel of their wide, open, cockpit on a smaller 18' to 22' boat. Plus the catboats seem to have a simplicity about them.
That Typhoon Daysailor that I saw in Good Old Boat gives me the same sense of openess and simplicity. Thanks for the discussion. Its fun to learn about the history and features of the various CD models.

Open Tys
A friend has one on the Magothy River, near Annapolis. It is a sistership to Sandy's. This coming summer we are going to try and get them together and do a little "one design". That should stir the troops up a bit.
Also go to the search feature and look up "Open Typhoons", there is quite a bit already on the board.
