summer in Chesapeake Bay

Post by Mike C »

there's a number of cruising guides for the Chesapeake Bay but does anyone know of one that has boating stops with special historical points of interest, or special biological or zoological events and places to visit that can be reached by anchoring and taking a dinghy ashore. For the kids that would be more eventful than just hopping from one marine to the next.

Great Question!

I sure would like to see a directory like this for all the CDSOA cruising areas. The kids (younger and older) would love it! :D

Chesapeake Bay Points of Interest

Try Chesapeake Bay magazine. There are always several write ups on interesting places. www.cbmmag.net is the website.

Have fun on the bay,

Try www.baygateways.net for a long list of areas to explore that are not found in the usual sources.

Consider Sunny Annapolis!

Try using the Naval Academy seawall for a short tie-up. Just kidding!
However the town is very tourist friendly.

another link....

Mike,

Here's another link you might find useful (some links to other pages):

http://www.thebayguide.com/

I have the Maptech Guide. It has a small amount of historical stuff, mostly in the "activities" sections.

I've enjoyed the museums at St. Michael's, the Calvert Maritime Museum at Solomon's Island, and the small museum at Reedville (mostly about the menhaden industry).

Tangier Island is a unique place, especially if you go to the "Deep Six" waterman's hangout *early* in the morning. I found that I couldn't quite follow some of the things they were saying. :D

I think a replica of the "Dove" might live at St. Mary's City and a while back there was a reenactment of a naval battle at Battle Creek (off Patuxent).

St. Clement's Island (Potomac) has room to run around and plaques commemorating early Maryland settlement.

Mike, if you see nothing else...

Mike,
If you take the kids to nothing else, you must see the Naval Museum and John Paul Jones' crypt at the US Naval Acadamy in Annapolis. They're free and indescribable.

Annapolis

Post by Mike Johnson »

Having graduated in 81 from Annapolis, I can assure all that the tour of the grounds, noon formation, friday parades, the cript, Bancroft hall, Naval museum, down town annapolis, Eastport, etc offer plenty for all. I am happy to call it home to both of my CD's now
