Boat Therapy/De-Tox

This morning I pathetically sat in the cockpit of my Ty under the blue tarp I Rube Goldberged into place a month ago and yelled, "Ready to come about?" I waited for a few moments and when I realized no one was going to answer I aborted the tack, shook off the snow that fell last night, then went in for a beer by the fire. Such is winter in the Berkshires...

What are others doing for boat-therapy during these dark days in the North?

Notice the finger tip light touch of the tiller in the first pic.
Sails seem to be trimmed to perfection based on the few tell tails that I could see.
What am I doing you ask?
Sanding, and also trying to get off the shelf LED's to work in my existing lamps.

Tim, Nice looking boat. Got to tell you that your doing it all wrong. When you bury your rail of the TY you got to wrap the forsheet around the winch or else your going to split your combing. Thats what Im told.
You dont look like your a wrestler on WWF. I guess your able to cleet your sheets by hand. Im only 157 pounds and I dont lift wieghts. I have winchs too but I dont need to use them. Not on a TY.
How far under do others want to bury there rail? When a average person cant handle a TY sheet, there overpowerd and time to reduse sail area. Serously, you better start using your winchs. Al

Those are some beautiful pictures of a TY under sail. Al, I hope you never have problems with splitting but there is that possibility. If you check the archives you will find quite a few post of people wondering how to repair their cracked combing boards. The problems usually originate at the cleat with it's two unbacked fasteners inline with the grain of the wood. Just because it has not happened yet does not mean it could not. Our boats are getting older and going straight to the cleat puts a lot of strain on the wood in a bad direction relative to the grain. It would be some insurance if you installed the Spartan bronze backing plates to help spread the load. If you were trying to split wood a bit of prying on some counter sunk screws could be pretty effective. Luckily teak is some pretty tennatious stuff.
As for my dreams about sailing; well they are just going to have to wait cause we are still in the water. I winterized the boat but left the sails on and we have a sail planed for right after Christmas. It will be the bird and seal cruise on Fishers Island Sound. I figure it will be well worth another gallon of the pink stuff to rewinterize the engine. Bring on the fleece and gloves were not done yet, Steve.

Hard water sailing

Maumee Bay in Toledo is frozen solid!!! We had about 12 boats noodling around out there. If you ever want the thrill of your life contact your local ice yacht club and find out where they are sailing. Show up and someone will always give you a ride. I had the Arrow scootin along at about 40 mph and the DN's were flying past me. It's a great wayto sharpen your skills and soften the seperation anxiety.

I hate to dissapoint you Al, but the WWF as you remember it doesn't exist anymore. Now they just save panda bears. It's the WWE now! I'm glad you enjoyed those pictures. I am a faithful winch user, but I must admit the pictures you viewed were for my sailing site and were staged just to get some good shots. I was not on any one tack for more than a minute, and to make it easier I didn't use the winches. I know, I know, it will be a lump of coal for me tomorrow. That's ok though, I look forward to selling it on E-Bay with the cost of energy and all.

I am of the crowd that thinks they should be used though to reduce the stress put on the cleats. I did purchase coaming cleat backing plates from Spartan ($7 each) a few weeks ago and plan on putting them on to spread the load out over a larger area. I am also adding stern cleats on starboard and port so docking isn't a weird experience anymore. I plan on placing them so that they are easily accessible from the cockpit so that they can be used for the jib sheet when the wind really blows. I didn't mean to flaunt my manlihood by inadvertantly showing off my bicep ability. Next time I'll be a good role model and use the winches. :wink: One thing all Ty owners will agree on is that we have incredible little boats that are beautiful and capable, making them a rare gem these days. Very nice Ty!

The wife and I went for a walk around Castle Island in Boston. Beautiful day, I can't wait to get the boat up here for next season. I stopped by the town beach on the way to my folks' place and saw somebody out, nice night for a xmas cruise.

Hi Tim, Winter seems to come early and stay late here in Minnesota too. I rely on photographs and memories. Thanks for yours, I added them to my collection. There is something about the healing motion of a sailboat that i feel especially drawn to, and in that regard, I consider the typhoon the greatest little sailboat ever. Mine seems to turn into a magic carpet after a great susnset.

Winter dreams

To get through the winter, I spend a lot of my time working in or on ERRANT ONE. I was on the boat friday working on the ckt panel. I was there yesterday finishing up that work. It takes me a while because I like to stop in the middle of the day and take a nap in the stbd berth and dream fo the adventures to come this spring and summer. Goal is to have the boat back together and in the water before the Volvo Ocean race hits Annapolis.

Marv, that is the genny. If I rigged that sail inside the shrouds like my much smaller jib, I would not be able to let the sails out as I fell off the wind. THey would be hitting the shrouds unless they are sheeted on the outside like they are. Take a closer look at the pic below. The blue and green sail I used for earlier pictures has the exact same dimensions as the white one you see below. The blue and green you saw in earlier pictures is made of a lighter material and works well in zephyrs. Beautiful boats. Tim
