Although it does not appear in the manual, my 1984 CD31 has two vents to the engineroom on the small deck aft of the rear cockpit lazerette. Fore and aft of each of these vents is a heavy bronze padeye screwed into the deck. I have no idea what the padeyes are for. The running backstays will not reach this far back. The eyes at the bases of the aft stanchions appear to be for the running backstays. Anyone have any thoughts on these padeyes? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Re: CD31
John, I have the same vintage CD 31 and do not have any pad eyes near the vents. I'm also cutter rigged and don't have any running backstays. Are you ketch rigged by any chance? Failing that I wonder if they might be post production additions to lash down a dinghy or life raft or something like that. It they were for backstays I wouldn't think they would just be bolted through the deck. You'd need a pretty substantial bracket tied into the hull in some way and I wouldn't think you'd want to put them near holes in the deck (for the vents). Maybe attachment points for davit arms or for a wind generator or wind vane or even flopper stoppers? Robinhood marine can probably tell you if they were ever factory issue.John Baker wrote: Although it does not appear in the manual, my 1984 CD31 has two vents to the engineroom on the small deck aft of the rear cockpit lazerette. Ditto : Re: CD31Padeyes
My CD31, #28 is not equipped with the padeyes you described. And like Tom I think they are not for the attachment of running backstays. Chainplates, attatched to the hull, and further outboard would have been the method for sure. Cape Dorys are built strong, those padeyes wouldn't distribute the rig tension, they'd just pull thru the deck at an angle. I dont think any 31's were built as a ketch or yawl.
You'll have to ask the former owners what they are really about, but now my curiosity is aroused ( We sailors are always looking for a better arrangement arent we ? ).

Re: CD31
Could they be attachment points for snatch blocks to be used with a chute? My old CD36 had the same eyes.
