Land...."ALEGRIA" is her name...Hull # CPDE0803M81F....yes, a 1981, in excellent condition, had an excellent survey, needs a few minor things done but nothing that will keep me from a good season....I will certainly be using this site even more now...I am also very anxious to know more about the previous owners,,,the people
that I purchased from had bought her on Cape Cod and sailed her here to Long Island.....so, maybe one of the owners is reading this....I would like to know more about her name...who named her ....Why ALEFRIA??? I really haven't decided about a new name ...So, Thanks to all for my previous questions..and here's a Toast to "ALEGRIA" and Wishes to all of you for Constant C's, Graceful Winds and always Safe

Re: Congratulations, and about re-naming...
Rita,
Congratulations and welcome aboard! When you do rename her, there are a few things you must do! First is the de-naming ceremony. You must give notice to Aeolus and Neptune. To do this one recites a rather lenghty prayer and pours Virgin Urine over the fantail! No, I'm not kidding. I have the prayer someplace and will get it for you. The problem is the Virgin Urine, I walked the docks of Mystic for months and couldn't find ONE! Tried buying it from West Marine, they wanted $200.00 an ounce! Finally settled on a cheap small bottle of Chardonay, poured a little of that on said stern, and Carol and I drank the rest! Cristening is a LOT simpler, a bottle of Champagne, a few words to Aeolus and Neptune, and you're done.
Don't forget to enter your information in the registry. This is a great site isn't it!

Renaming
Well......my boat is a 72 and I purchased it in 1980......still sailing it. The name is more livable than most so I kept it. "Je Revien". French for "I will return". I was aware that the boat had 3 previous owners in the 8 short year previous to my ownership. The great thing about keeping the name is that the 2 previous owners found me....I didn't have to look(owners #1 & #2). (Of course I knew owner #3.he sold me the boat and was a freind).
I was in winter storage and a guy walks up with a kid. He can see the transom of my boat from his kitchen window all winter! Owner #2! He tells me about the crushed mast step.....with the epoxied in screws and other calamities and things for me to worry about. Apparently he was the one who tweaked all the rigging and put the cracks around the chainplates and replaced the deck support under the mast with massive oak boards.
It gets better....last year in drydock I find a tiny piece of paper floating around on the floor of the cabin (OK....I should fix those deck leaks). Almost throwing it out I notice a phone mumber and the message....."I sailed on the maiden voyage of the Je Revien. I call the guy. His freind had taken delivery in Wickford ,RI (Sea Sprite 23) and sailed it down to NJ (Barnegat Bay). I had purchased and sailed the boat 30 miles north in the Sandy Hook area until bringing it back"home" in 86. I even was in the original marina for a year! Anyway..that guy bought a 35 foot pearson and just sold it last year.He tells me about taking the 35 foot high boat through a 33 foot bridge! He got pinned so badly by catching the mast that he had the transom under and the cockpit flooded! Thats how the forward turnbuckle got bent! He had to be towed out. Thank god for upper jumper spreaders and double lowers. He sent me maiden voyage pictures and is coming sailing this year with me. Small world.

Do perform the ceremony...
I know one sailor who didn't and had bad luck afterwards! Besides, it's fun. I can't believe West Marine wanted $200.00 an ounce for something as simple as Virgin Urin! I wonder if I could get my daughter to jar up a few ounces?

Re: Do perform the ceremony...
Ryan,
Yes, one can suffer bad luck if the ceremony is not performed! But, DON'T get your daughter involved...she will be pestered for a long time by every traditional/historical sailor on the docks!!! This is FUN, isn't it!

Re: New Owner....Denaming/Renaming Ceremony
<a href="http://www.48north.com/aug97/denaming.htm">Vigor's Denaming Ceremony</a>
"In the name of all who have sailed aboard this ship in the past, and in the name of all who may sail aboard her in the future, we invoke the ancient gods of the wind and the sea to favor us with their
blessing today.
"Mighty Neptune, king of all that moves in or on the waves; and mighty Aeolus (pronounced EE-oh-lus), guardian of the winds and all that blows before them:
"We offer you our thanks for the protection you have afforded this vessel in the past. We voice our gratitude that she has always found shelter from tempest and storm and enjoyed safe passage to port.
"Now, wherefore, we submit this supplication, that the name whereby this vessel has hitherto been known (_____), be struck and removed from your records.
"Further, we ask that when she is again presented for blessing with another name, she shall be recognized and shall be accorded once again the selfsame privileges she previously enjoyed.
"In return for which, we rededicate this vessel to your domain in full knowledge that she shall be subject as always to the immutable laws of the gods of the wind and the sea.
"In consequence whereof, and in good faith, we seal this pact with a libation offered according to the hallowed ritual of the sea."
Christening Ceremony
After a boat is denamed, you simply need to rename it using the traditional christening ceremony, preferably with Queen Elizabeth breaking a bottle of champagne on the bow, and saying the words:
"I name this ship ___________ and may she bring fair winds and good fortune to all who sail on her."
Good luck and have a bunch of fun with your new old boat.

Re: Yes, that's it...thanks Catherine, it worked well for Ha
Catherine,
Thanks for posting the ceremony's for the new owners. I knew they were around here somewhere, but forgot were they came from. I think you gave them to me last year, and they have worked well so far!

>>When you do rename her, there are a few things you must do!<<
It's also a good idea to keep the old name on board. When I removed SANDERLING and replaced it with LIQUIDITY, I used rubbing compound. The old name ended up in the rag I used, turning it blue as the paint came off the transom. The rag, and the old name, are kept safely on board. Can't be too careful!
Hey... looking forward to sailing down to Onset with you!! Any plans for post Onset crusing? We'd like to hit the Vinyard and perhaps get to Cuttyhunk, etc. Interesting planning with the currents and the prevailing SW winds.

Re: Onset ? ? ?
Neil,
I haven't yet made the decision of whether or not to go to Onset. Don't know yet if I will be available the week of July 17-18 or not. Lot of STUFF going on at work right now. I will be at Noank Shipyard and off the coast that weekend at a minimum. Will let you know if I change plans.
