We have a trip planned to Mystic, CT later this month, and will stay for about a week. We have never been to this part of the country. We have some visitor information about what to do while there and plan to see more than just Mystic. We don't want to miss anything. Can anyone recommend places to go, things NOT TO MISS, places to eat, things to do, boat rentals, etc? Thanks in advance,

Re: Visit to Mystic, CT
John & Nancy,
We live in Lisbon, Ct, about 10 miles north of Mystic, with our Boat moored in Groton, CT. I have been in area about 20 years. Please call me at 860-859-9600 (evening, the recording will reflect 'Lonesome Dove B&B', you DO have the correct number) or 508-875-2121 ext.232 (days - work) for all kinds of info. Also y'all invited to a sail on our CD30K.

John & Nancy:
The Mystic Aquarium just opened two new exhibits - one that features three Alaskan whales, and a whole new wing called the Institute for Exploration that features exhibits about the technology and archaeology of underwater exploration. Bob Ballard (the guy who found the Titanic) put the whole thing together. I haven't seen the IFE since it became fully operational (my company built some of the exhibit) but what I saw was pretty impressive, if you are into the technology of deep sea exploration - lots of video, computer graphics, and interactive toys (we hope to get the robot arm from a DSV working today, so visitors can actually pick up "artifacts" from the "sea floor").
Mystic is only about an hour from Newport - Sailing, Tennis Hall of Fame, Mansions, shopping, etc. If you are looking for beaches, take the ferry from New London to Block Island for the day - it is worth the trip.

If you are a member of the Mystic Museum you can reserve space to dock along the bulkhead -- or at least you used to be able to. It is a joy if you can do it. The park is open to you after the crowd is gone -- like walking around in the 18th Century. It's worth joining the Museum for the priviledge. One of our most memorable stops.
