BMW diesel without oil filter?

Post by guest »

Just bought a 68 Bristol 27' with 83 BMW D12 engine and will be slipped at Little Creek Amphib Base in Norfolk. I was looking for a Cape Dory btw but got a good deal on the bristol. Owners manual does not show or speak of an oil filter on this engine. From the front of engine I cannot see one. Air filter - yes. Fuel filter -yes. Oil filter - no. Manual says change oil at 50 hours. I haven't had a chance to make like a squirrel and crawl to the rear of the engine. Has anyone ever heard of this? The BMW has a rep of being bulletproof but that seems unlikely w/o oil filter.

My first sailboat. I'm tickled. This vessel was the former plaything of the Drexel family. A slipmate at little creek is a beautiful CD27, haven't seen the owner yet.

You may recall that the VW beetle was introduced late 30's early 40's without an oil filter. Didn't get one till they went to liquid cooled engines sometime in the 70's I believe. They had pretty good reps for engine longevity back then but I 'd follow thru with frequent oil changes.

I currently have a VW with their diesel (53mpg highway BTW ) and use one of those pumps ( a Pella from any auto or marine supply ) rather than try to get under the car to drain it - it seems to work well so far as long as I get the pickup to the bottom of the pan.

I had a 1958 Chevy panel truck that I bought from my dad in the 70s. He had bought it brand new with out the optional cartridge oil filter. I found one and added it when I took over. The filter arrangement consisted of a filter that U bolted onto the intake manifold and a couple of copper oil lines. It was not too difficult to deal with and I always felt like I did a good thing. I wonder if the engine would have done just as well wihtout the filter and very frequent oil changes. Congradulations on your new boat, Steve.

My Farymann A 30 Has no oil filter ,nor a oilpump . Just splash lubrication . I change the oil every month . Cheap maintenance. I like equipment that was designed with the KISS principle in mind!!!!

No oil pump

Assuming my BMW has no oil pump, how does the single cylinder valve train at the top of engine get lubricated? Splash lubrication would work at the bottom end but at the top? Any insight? I am a puzzled shade tree mechanic.

BTW thanks for the replys. I was thinking early senility was beginning. Now all I need to find is a local norfolk supplier for the air and fuel filters for the BMW.

Maybe someone with more experience could jump in here. I only know of two ways to lubricate a running engine ( not counting a little old man squirting oil from a can ). One's an oil pump - which I hope you've got. The second is splash lubrication. Typically the maker will put some thought into the location and placement of the moving parts ( crank, rods and such ) that it'll whip the oil around to lubricate moving parts. IMHO its not the way to go. You need an oil pump to use things like hydraulic ( as opposed to solid ) valve lifters and such.

Best of luck with your new B27

An unusual feature of these engines is their simple splash-lubrication
system. Normally, a marine diesel has an oil-pump, pressure alarm, oil
filter: but not the D7 or D12, none of those things. Instead, the con-rod is
extended below the big-end to carry a dipper, a metal scoop which on each
turn of the engine, picks up a spoonful of oil and hurls it around the
inside of the crankcase. This system has given no trouble to me, nor to the
many D7 and D12 owners I have been in contact with. yet.

Here is a website that will be very useful to you.

D12 Manuals?

Post by pdewilde »

Hello,
Seems some of you still have some BMW D12 manuals, is it possible to get an electronic copy of them (scanned for ex.)?
I'm especially looking for the Owner's Manual, I have a D7 one but it's not really adapted to my D12.

Thanks in advance,

Patrick
