Universal M-18 Diesel Heat Exchanger replacement

I have an 86 CD-30 Cutter B option with a Universal M-18 (13 hp ) diesel. The other day I noticed that my bilge pump was cycling on an off way too frequently. After looking around I found that with the engine on, the heat exchanger was spewing salt water from the port side end (the side without the end cap). Using my hand I could feel that the end of the unit had corroded and was allowing the salt water to leak out under pressure with the engine on and a slow drip with the engine off and the seacock open. With the seacock closed the boat is safe and does not take on water.

My question. Has anyone replaced this unit? Anything specific I should know that might save me a headache? A source for the part.

The heat exchanger is not a Universal part. It's made by SenDur and any parts house can order it for you. Bring your deep pockets. That "corrossion" may be electrolysis caused by not changing your zinc often enough. They eat zincs more often than you'd expect and the water heater tank gets eaten too.

Hi Jack:
I removed mine a few months ago. I had to de-scale it. It's held onto a bracket with two hose clamps, so no special tools were required. It's located behind the engine, so it's a tight squeeze getting access. I replaced the hoses at the same time, which made the job easier.

The zinc for the heat exchanger is on the port side. Could it be leaking there? When was the last time you changed your zinc?

Are just the hose clamps holding it on?
What about the bracket?
If it is just hose clamps then it should be relatively easy.

I intend to replace the hoses as well.

As for the zinc, it has not been replaced since I have the boat.
it appears that unit has corroded, however I will be very mindful of the zinc in the future,
