Compass repairs

Post by Rich »

My CD26 has a Ritchie bulkhead compass. The compass sits kind of cockeyed, listing to starboard, in about half the oil required for normal operation. Would refilling the oil take the list out? Are there user settings to correct this? Does anyone have experience with Ritchie or third party compass repair shops they could recommend? Thanks.

This is your man:
Island Compasses
Fred Colt
3732 Carroll Drive
Edgewater, MD 21037
410-798-1445

He's good, he's dependable, and he's reasonable. I've used him for the compasses on two different boats, and my father has used him as well. When he retires, I don't know what I'm gonna do. Not only did he repair one compass of mine; he told me the complete manufacturing history of the model, dating back to World War II... (the Big War)

Good Luck!

Rich,

I also have a Richie Compass..best made for a reasonable dollar, and they are repairable (unlike some). The compass is probably rotated in the holder. Try taking the compass out, refilling the compass with ***Unscented Mineral Oil*** from the hardware store. This is a clear mineral oil, identical to the fluid in the Richie compasses (or Stoddards Solvent, which is essentially the same thing but hard to find now)-according to the Richie Service Dept. Top it off, and compress the bellows carefully to remove the air bubble. Repeat until the bubble is gone when the bellows is relaxed. Now put it back in and rotate to find a level position in the holder.

Cheers!
