How do I give a CD a detailing?

Post by Cap'n Mike »

After hurricane Rita, I want to give my CD a thorough detailing. Since the dodger and bimini are off, I want to clean the deck.

What is the best way to clean the fiberglass deck? Any good products?

How can I clean the bronze fittings for the dodger and bimini?

I also want to clean the salon.

What is the best way to clean the combination teak and fiberglass salon? What teak product is the best?

Thank you all for replying!

For major cleaning I use Soft Scrub and Barkeepers Friend(especially great in removing rust stains from gelcoat and of course the stainless).

I am unfamiliar with bronze fittings for canvas frames...can you elaborate? I have only seen stainless (and to some extent aluminium) hardware used.

cleaning her up

Post by rtbates »

For the deck I've found that either WM's deck cleaner or it's cheaper cousin,Starbright, works great at getting the deck clean w/o too much elbow grease. It contains a chemical that helps keep dirt from re-attaching and gives a nice sheen w/o being slippery. I much prefer it to a pressure washer that some I see use. The last time I cleaned Seraph's 21 year old deck the owner across asked me if I had the deck repainted recently!
As for the bronze, I'd do nothing.
The interior wood work, if in nice shape Lemon Oil. I used tung oil on mine with good results. Three coats so far. The nice thing about tung oil, is you control the sheen with the number of coats. The more oil the more shine. I then clean with lemon oil every so often.
Homedepot has a nice product for cleaning fiberglass showers and tubs. The name I can't recall, but it's in a pink container. Comes in either liquid quart cans or spray cans. Cleans and shines fiberglass. Be aware that it will make FG very slippery.

good luck with the project

I'll second the Soft-Scrub and Bartender's friend.

Purple Power

Post by Mike Raehl »

One of my dock mates recommended a product called Purple Power for cleaning deck fiberglass. It is available in spray and one gallon bottles from Auto Zone. Spray full strength on difficult spots and mix in bucket for overall washing. Works great!

A high end antique dealer shared his secret to refinishing woodwork with us. The products are made by the Howard Company (www.howardproducts.com) and consist of "restor a finish" which blends out scratches; "feed n wax" which penetrates and leaves a waxy finish; and "orange oil" which creates a soft looking and very natural finish. You can use all 3 or any one.
I like the orange oil better than varnish and it is exceedingly easy to apply with a soft cloth. What doesn't soak in (very little on Pilgrim) wipes off with little effort.
This has the potential of being a great night. Red Sox are winning and yankees are losing.

The stuff in the pink can is called Gel Gloss. Also available at Ace Hardware stores, at least mine!

Detailing CD

Capt Mike
This spring I discovered the miricle cure, we have all been looking for for years. I like my boat to look great, I am anal about clean topsides. My wife recommended I try the Dirt Eraser from Mr. Clean. It is a soft white foam sponge with soem type of cleaningagent and or very very fine abrasive fused into it. No dtetergent required just water. I removed spots that I have been trying to clean for years, with little effort. You truly have to see it to believe it. A quick rinse and a coat of wax, I am the talk of the marina.
