A novice question

Post by Jim Serra »

I have yet to sail my Ty. As I'm planning to add reefing hardware, I'm wondering which side of the boom the main halyard is on (if standing in the cockpit facing the mast)? I'm asking b/c I just got a new gooseneck from Rigrite and the reefing hook is on the port side of the fitting.

Thanks.

By convention, the main halyard runs down the starboard side of the mast.

If you have more than one row of reef points you will usually have a reefing hook on both sides. The first reef goes on one hook, the second reef goes on the hook on the other side, and if you have to go to a third reef you remove the cringle from the first hook (which now has no tension on it) and re-use it for the third reef. You tie your reef points in on the same side as the main halyard so that you don't have to change sides to shake them out, i.e., the starboard side. At least that's how I do it.

It is traditional to rig the main haliard on the starboard side of the mast- that's the starboard side facing forward or aftward. When reefing, heave to the vessel on starboard tack; slack the main sheet and go forward. All lines can be handled at one position or starboard side of the mast. Don't forget to rig a topping lift for the boom or you might receive some unwanted chips in the gelcoat.
