We just bought a 1972 CD Typhoon Weekender (Hull #230). We are trying to find two winch handles that fit the Lewmar #6 winches. We contacted Lewmar and several other vendors but no luck yet. If anyone knows of a source please let us know. Thanks

I had a typhoon for a couple of years and sailed in all types of weather and all ranges of wind and never needed the winch handles. There is not enough force generated by the sail that can not be overcome by hand alone. If you do need a handle any short handle should do. The openings should be uniform with all other Lewmar products which tend to be universal.

Dave - I have found all Lewmar winches to accept the same size handle post. The only difference I have seen are some extra long handles which you would never need on a Typhoon. I have owned some very inexpensive and some moderately expensive winch handles. My one word of advise is that they both make the same sound when they go over the side and hit the water.
The only recommendation I would have is that the handle locks into the winch. Some inexpensive handles do not have the locking mechanism and they tend to fall out easily as you use them.

I whole heartedly agree with brent. The few times I did need a little extra force, I would just turn one wrap on the leeward winch and then put several on the windward winch. Then I could use my foot between the two. This left me one hand on the tiller and one hand to pull the slack up on the sheet. Yes, I sail solo a lot.
