New CD Ty Owner Introduction

Hello all, I am in the process of purchasing (this Friday) CD Typhoon #1062 currently "Pattie B" and will sail her from our home port of Rockland, Maine out into Penobscot Bay, Muscongus Bay and around the hundreds of islands.

The first order of business is going for a sail! The boat truly is a turn-key vessel and the remaining two months of this season she will simply be sailed. Plans for the off-season include removing some ridiculous electronics from the cabin around the companionway (they don't work anyway at this point), glassing over some strangely placed compartments in the cockpit sole and some brightwork refinishing. Rigging looks good, both standing and running. I have to pick up a little OB for her, but other than that, there really isn't anything needed.

I'll be posting pix and the occasional sailing report as time allows and I am sure I'll be looking for answers to a few dozen questions as things pop up.

Anyhow, that's me, that's the boat and here we is.

Sounds like you'll be out sailing long before we are! We picked up our "new" Ty #1163 ('76) today. She's a project boat (at a great price) with lots of potential. Very saggy cabin top (the compression post was about 2" too short) and a terrible deck paint job.

No ridiculous electronics for us -- but random pieces of foam crammed into every nook and cranny. Lots and lots of cleaning ahead -- although she does have a great new set of sails! The running & standing rigging is in excellent condition and we got a nice Nissan 3.5HP longshaft.

Thankfully the seller was a real trooper and helped us refloat the boat to position her better on the trailer. The trailer wasn't designed for a Ty and had no keel guides which made it a little harder than we had anticipated.

We'll be busy over the winter (thankfully we live in the South) getting her ready for next year. Her "big sister" (a Seasprite 23) is heading for launch Friday. They're currently sitting side by side in our driveway -- Carl Alberg would be proud (prouder yet if they were both in the water!).

Thanks Bly, things are looking good so far. I rowed out to my new mooring tonight to check it out. The two pendants are 3/4" yale cordage and are just plain massive! I am going to head to Hamilton Marine tomorrow AM and get a pick-up bouy and a more reasonable hank of line for us to use ... that hawser looks like something the USS Wasp left behind when it pulled out of town last week!

All went well and the boat is riding comfortably on her mooring in her new home of Rockland Harbor:

We got her rigged and had her sails hoisted and free when the wind ... just ... died. I mean, dead. Not a puff. Soooo, with no motor and a dinghy that rows like a pumpkin, I called for a launch to tow me around to the mooring. Talk about best laid plans! All is well though and we will have many, many opportunities to sail in the future. It was just a funny way to start a relationship, especially since the launch operator had us going 7 knots at one point before I asked him to slow down a bit! I may have broken the standing speed record for a Ty on my maiden voyage!

Thanks again to Nick for bringing her up from Phippsburg and launching her. It saved a major amount of hassle for me in the grand scheme of things. Hope your ride back was uneventful and that BA comes to their senses and halts the strike so you and Wendy can return back to Jolly Old in a reasonable amount of time.

Hi Paddy,
That's too bad about the wind, it seemed nice and gentle for a first sail when we left you. Good trip back and we're hoping for a last sail tomorrow before we head back. Strike seems to be over for the time being so hope we won't be camping in Logan Sunday night!

Yeah, it was looking really good, right up until the very minute I was explaining to my wife how we were going to cast off and harden up ... and then it literally died. Completely. No worries though, plenty of sails to come!
