Photos of galley compartment expansion project

Post by Cathy Monaghan »

This project was completed in 2003 and gave us additional space for storage of pots and pans in the galley. To do this we removed the stove/oven from the galley, then I removed the trim from around the opening into the pots/pans compartment and used a jigsaw to enlarge the opening. I then used the jigsaw to cut a large opening in the bulkhead directly below the galley cabinets on the port side of the boat, left of the sink and right of the stove/oven compartment. I then fashioned a side and bottom for the new compartment out of plywood, fastened strips of 1x1 to the bulkheads for the new side and bottom to attach to, and afixed the side then the bottom. It was all painted white and the opening was trimmed in teak. A new lid for the top of the compartment, to fit the opening that was enlarged, was fashioned out of butcher block and looks quite smart when in place.

Click on any of the photos below for an enlargement.

Maybe these photos will give you some ideas on how to improve galley storage on your boat.

Pretty cool. Just how much other empty space is there in the cabin area that isn't accessed yet?

Maybe this will give you some idea.

When I bought the boat, the surveyor spent half a day poking around in this space and that. Some of the places he poked into, I haven't seen since.

Part of the storage problem is that the access can be smaller than what you want to put into the space. That requires either a different storage plan or major surgery.

That said, pots and pans do take up lots of space. Things that nest are nice, but they also take more unpacking and repacking to access.

I'd like a place for a larger trash can. Anyone have any ideas? Right now, I keep a smaller one in the space under the stove.

What's under the stairs? Could they be engineered to open?

The motor is under there. I suppose that mixing trash and moving parts isn't a great idea.

Trash can CD28

Post by RichMason »

I don't know where the factory trash location is but I believe the one on my 28 was installed by the PO. He made an opening a little smaller than the stove a few inches behind it and stuck a rubbermaid mid-sized trash can in it so that the lip of the trash can overlaps the cabinet top all around and holds it up. I believe that he made another lid for the stove out of particle board with a plastic cuttingboard top and used the cutting board that came with the stove as the trash can lid. This may exist on other boats but I didn't see one like it on any of the 28s on yachtworld so I assume its a modification.

No pun intended, but that cuts into existing storage space that I use for pots and whatever.

I'm thinking that some sort of plastic bag holder might be better than a trash can, anyway. Maybe something the right size would fit the inside of the access panel. That said, I'm thinking that the backs of the panels would be good storage for small items that could be hung or placed in small, narrow bins.

Trash stowage

Post by Steve L »

We just finished our first real (short) cruise in the CD-30 and trash was just hug in a plastic bag at the front of the stove. There has to be a better place. We have a deep stowage area next to the ice box that has a wooden cover on it that has become the bread, cereal, chips locker. There is a cabinet down low on the starboard side that could fit a trash bin but is used for snacks. Then there is the cabinet door under the sink with the whirling belts of death inside!! I guess OSHA does not have jurisdiction over boats because that situation would never be allowed in a shop on land. We keep a few engine spares in there and the door is never opened while the engine is running, lest we get the temptation to poke a finger in there. It seems like you could gain a whole lot of space just by fashioning a belt guard for the alternator drive belt. Once the threat had been removed a door mounted trash could be installed. Has anyone done anything along those lines or have a better place for trash on a CD-30? There is also a tremendous amount of space under the cockpit sole. There you have the unguarded shaft spinning about. Again if there was a guard this area could be used for heavy stowage of infrequently used items. Is there any reason not to build duck boards over the shaft so that things could be stored there? I like that area because it is low and central. We are loving the boat and looking forward to many nore trips, Steve.

Dealing with trash

This isn't the perfect solution, and the layout of each Cape Dory model differs a bit, but this works for us on our CD32. We have two hooks in the galley that are attached to the bulkhead for the icebox and we can tie a trash bag there to those hooks. You don't need a large bag or can. A bag the size of the plastic ones they give you at the supermarket are good and big enough. You can double-bag them if you don't think they're strong enough or if one has a hole in it. It's also a good way to recycle plastic bags. Anyway, when it's full we tie the top of the bag closed and put it in a big green garbage bag that we keep in a locker in the cockpit. We keep adding the little bags to the big ones until we reach a destination where the trash can be unloaded. At least that's how we do it for long trips. For short daysails, a small trash bag is all that's needed and it's offloaded when we get back to our berth.

trash storage

Post by Mark Abramski »

when i redid the interior of linda jean (cd 27) i cut out a fold out panel in the plywood behind the head. it was dead space that now is used for a small trash can. i sized it to use grocery store plastic bags.

Wastebasket

Post by Parfait's Provider »

Parfait carries a small wastebasket that hangs on a simple cleat inside the door below the galley sink. It is small enought to fit when the door swings and can be lined with a grocery bag. It is pretty amazing what will fit in such a container if you compress it on occassion. Recycleables are placed in another grocery bag that we hang just inside the companionway; there is probably a better place, but we haven't bothered to find it yet.
Keep on sailing,

Pics?

Post by MFC »

Hi Cathy.

Any chance you could share some of the pics which used to be posted on this thread? The galley storage on the 330 always seems like it was designed as some sort of practical joke . . . lots of little compartments which are totally unusable. I'd love to see what you did with your 32.

Do Photobucket uploads automatically expire after certain amount of time? It seems like we have lots of dead photo links on the site.

Thx.
