CD36 standing rigging swage failure

Post by Warren Stringer »

We are looking at buying a 1981 CD36 which has been cruised extensively. The survey shows the boat to be in good shape structurally, but a dye penetration test has shown virtually all the swage fittings on the standing rigging to be cracked, some in several places, and the entire standing rig will need to be replaced. I do not know at this point if this is the original rigging. Questions: is this unusual? Should it raise concern about other areal of the boat and its maintenance? Should the rig be replaced with swage terminals again or should we go to something like Norseman or Sta-Lock? Thanks in advance,

Warren

Warren, the standing advice out here is to replace the standing rigging every 10 to 12 years, and I believe this has been published in a number of places. I had a cracked swage on the bobstay of my 1981 CD30 which prompted me to just go and replace all the standard rigging. It was well worth the peace of mind I now have and will have for the next decade. I think this advice was born from something other than just greed from riggers, I suspect there is a life to swaged rigging.

I kept all the old stuff as back up, by the way.
