What's up with Bristol Bronze?

Post by laustin »

Hi ....

A good friend of mine is just finishing up a restoration on a Cape Dory 10. He did an absolutely beautiful job. He has a wood shop which has all the equipment to make the old teak look new , etc. The inside hull has been repainted the old CD blue....

Anyway, the one "blemish" was the old black plastic hull plate. I mentioned to him that there was a company that would make up a bronze hull plate for him--- Bristol Bronze.... he placed the order almost 2 months ago. The company keeps telling him tomorrow , tomorrow , tomorrow ....... Is this normal with this company?

Thanks ,

Larry

You can do an archive search with the company name to find out more but I will sum up my knowledge of Roger and Bristol Bronze.
Roger is an intelligent and talented metallurgist as well as a gifted artisan but he may not be the greatest business person. Most complaints I recall were about time but I can't recall any regading quality. In the end I'm confident your friend will get a beautiful bronze plate that will last the rest of the boat's life. He may have to wait longer than he wanted but Roger is the only person who makes them so it is probably worth the wait.

roger is a very congenial person and will have a ten minute conversation with you regarding your needs and your boat, but don't count on getting your order filled. been a year and a half since i ordered some half-oval brass and bronze screws. got fed up waiting and ordered the items from jamestown distributors. had them within a week. they have a good website to boot for things bronze and sail-related that you may need.
