Discussion about how to use this board's software features and the CDSOA's website in general

Walt,

The Norton firewall is having no visible performance effect when enabled or disabled. Funny, when I check the Gzip compression with the firewall enabled it says it is functioning. I get the same result when it is disabled. I've tried it both ways several times since friday.

Personnaly I believe the firewall is not an issue. The problem only occurs with the Main Forum. The Main Forum is still only taking me to the first topic and not the one I click on. In this forum (About This Board) everything works fine and it takes me right to the message I've clicked on. I haven't tried the Sandbox forum but I'll give it a shot and see what happens.

No, I have not tried another browser. I will give IE a try to see if there is any difference.

Walt, I'm also having trouble with selecting individual messages in a topic. I have never, ever managed to go straight to a message. I am always taken to the top of the list and have to scroll down manually. It gets very frustrating.

I'm using Internet Explorer and dial-up, and even waiting until the progress bar is full doesn't help.

My question is this: do you have to be registered before this works properly?

I can't get it to fail.

I tried logging out - so it is treating me as a non-registered guest. I tried Internet Explorer 6. It always works.

Now, with IE - it does tend to take me a bit down below the message. If I hit Back and then Forward it positions correctly.

The reply topics link to a URL like this:

http://capedory.org/board/viewtopic.php?t=14501#69420

The capedory.org/board/viewtopic.php?t=14501 part displays the topic page. The #69420 goes to a label within the topic page that is in the first line of the individual message (in this case, post number 69420).

Couple of questions:

1) Are you getting a URL like that when you get to the top of the topic?

2) If you click the complete URL above, do you get to the correct place?

3) If you go to the index page with a recent message - with the tiny orange page icon displayed - and click that icon - do you get to the new message, or still at the top?

4) Suppose you click on a reply topic and get to the top of the page. If you click the Back button, and then the Forward button - do you get to the top, or to the message?

Hi Walt:

To answer your questions:

(1) I don't know. Where would I look for that URL?
(2) I don't know that either. All I can tell you is that it goes to Frank Vernet's message dated Wed. 2/23/05 at 1:38 p.m.
(3) I went to the Cape Dory Board Forum Index. I see no orange page icons anywhere. The only icons I ever see in any forum are the little yellow buoys. Never anything else.
(4) To the top. I always go to the top, never to the message direct.

If it helps, I'm running IE5 and my cookies are turned off.

In the address line at the top of your browser window.

Congratulations. You have successfully clicked into the middle of a topic. Frank's message is actually down near the bottom, as you can see by using PageUp or otherwise moving up in the page.
(3) I went to the Cape Dory Board Forum Index. I see no orange page icons anywhere. The only icons I ever see in any forum are the little yellow buoys. Never anything else.
Oops. Only a logged-in, registered user will see the little orange page icons. Sorry.
(4) To the top. I always go to the top, never to the message direct.
Hum. Well, you did get directly to the message when you clicked the URL

http://capedory.org/board/viewtopic.php?t=14501#69420

Now if you go to the Main Forum index page, find the topic "Bulkhead Mounted Dinette Table for CD33" and click on the title near the bottom: "Final Report Out On Call For Help" - that should display the identical URL in your browser's address window, and get you to the same message from Frank at 1:38 pm.

So try that and let me know whether you do have the same URL in the address bar.

Hi Walt:

I clicked on final report and was taken to the top of the topic as always. This was the URL I got:

http://capedory.org/board/viewtopic.php ... 835b33ed5d

I don't know if that's the same as any other URL. It's the only URL I can see.

Walt,

I tried it this evening and this time it took me to the message. Here is the URL it took me to:

http://capedory.org/board/viewtopic.php?t=14501#69420

I have been following your and John's comments on this matter. Usually in the Main Forum it does not take me to the message I click on but this time it did. Every once in awhile it will work but not always. Very intermittent. The other two forums always work. FWIW

Thanks, John. That URL showed me the bug in my code. The problem would only happen if you had cookies disabled.

It should work now.

Brilliant, Walt. You did indeed find your bug. It's working perfectly for me now.

I guess I'm the only Luddite in the country who won't enable cookies, except on a case by case basis, but once having seen how many thousands of cookies can accumulate on my hard drive, along with spyware and other nasty bugs, I decided it was grief I didn't need.

Anyway, sorry if I caused you extra bother, but very glad you got it sorted out.

Many thanks to you and Cathy for all the work you've put into the new board. It did strike me, though, that it might have been less work for you to keep the old board. Ironic that you made the change to keep the workload down! But I guess once it has settled down, and you have mollified all the Luddites, you'll be able to take a well-earned breather.

Cheers,

Actually I've installed a firewall mainly for the purpose of denying cookies selectively to those thousands of web sites that want to sit on my shoulder like a vicious parrot from the marketing department, poised to seize my preferences in its beak, chew, and spit out insultingly familiar web pages with "Hi, Walter" across the top.
