At the bottom of the first index page is a line "previous posts" or something like that. I choose 1 month, newest first, and nothing comes up. Another button maybe, B

Hi, Bill -

Were you looking at an old topic when you made those choices and got nothing to come up?

The choices you describe - "Display posts from previous - 1 month, newest first" - appear at the bottom of a message topic, not the index page.

(There is a choice at the bottom of the index pages, but it only has the time period choice - "Display topics from previous - 1 month".)

If you are looking at a very old topic, and make those choices of 1 month, newest first, it will try to show you just the messages in that one topic that are newer than you specified. In an old topic, there are no new posts, so it will come up "No posts exist for this topic."

Regards,

Walt

Here's something I discovered when searching in the archives:

If you want to search by author, the only authors that are found are those who are registered in the new system. And, I have to know what the author's EXACT posting name is. For instance, none of the following work:

'bober'
'm bober'
'm r bober'

Only 'm. r. bober' works. This isn't a show stopper, but I might have to search around to find what their exact name is.

The only way I can find an author's post from the old system is to use some instance of their name, but not as author, only as a keyword search, but then, I get any mention of that keyword, not those items posted by that keyword.

Have I missed something?

Searching for Author

Post by bilofsky »

That appears to be the case.

All the archive posts were made, effectively, as guests.

I tried a new test post as a guest author, and could not find any way to find that post using the author name.

This looks like a shortcoming of the phpBB search system. It neither indexes nor searches the author name field. It's not a change that would be easy to make, either, as it would require having a program to go through and add all the author names to the search word database.
