CD25 Outboard motor mount - Help Please

Post by Seth Berkley »

I have a Cape Dory 25. It sits on a mooring during the season in New York and my outboard motor has completely been destroyed (corrosion and growth of bottom junk in the intakes, etc.). The current engine compartment is too tight to manually raise and lower the engine. I do not want to mount the engine on the rear as it will ruin the lines of the boat...

Has anyone figured out or bought a system that allows easy raising and lowering of the outboard in the normal engine compartment? Any other suggestions (other than get an inboard?)?

Thanks.

Seth

We had a CD25 for seven years. The first year, we found the same problem you described. The engine overheated and died on us at the end of the season.

The following year we created a wooden plug for the bottom of the well. The plug was held in place by bungee cords and was easily removable. The engine was removed and the well was plugged whenever we moored the boat (and most of the time when we sailed) and the engine was stored in the starboard locker. We had some foam padding to keep the engine cushioned in the locker. The plug kept the water from sloshing around in the empty well.

Since we sailed from a mooring, this was a suitable solution for us. The engine was a 6 HP, and that made it fairly easy to replace when we did want it.

(I still get nostalgic just thinking about the boat though our CD33 is a reasonable substitute.)

Hope that helps, good luck.

Al
