Decorative advice sought

Post by Bill Goldsmith »

I've taken the plunge and decided to take years and years of bottom paint and old coatings off my 1980 CD27 and start anew from bare gelcoat. Because of some gouges and pinholes, and also because I have the opportunity, I am putting on a barrier coat after repairs are complete. Now I have to decide WHAT COLOR(s) to paint the bottom and bootstripe. It's like a blank canvas waiting for inspiration!! The most recent colors were brown bottom with navy boot. The original colors were red boot with blue bottom. The boat has a brown sail cover and dodger. All creative decorative suggestions will be considered!!!

Bill,

My vote is for a brown boot top and green bottom paint. This is the combination that I picked when I stripped the bottom of my CD27. It goes well with the CD standard of brown canvas work especially if the exterior teak is finished bright.

Captain Goldsmith,

Bill, I think the original red boot and blue bottom was one of two options. You could have had it with Dado Brown (Interlux, no longer made) boot and brown bottom also. I just re-did Hanaleis' boot top with Pettit Bright Work Brown polyurathane, and the bottom paint is Interlux Fiberglas Bottomcoat ACT (brown). Some say that that color scheme is 60's origin, but it (brown) was the signature of a Cape Dory. I kind of like the look, and wanted to keep it as close to original as I could - so brown it is. But, the red boot/blue bottom is good too. I guess ya makes your choice, pays your money and have at it! Of course, if you look back through the archives as to why a vessel is called she, one answer was that a gallon of paint makes both any vessel and any woman look a heck of a lot better!! Upps, better get off this net, or I'm going to take a beatin'! Fair winds...

My CD32 has a dark forest green boot stripe (Awlgrip)with a brown bottom. She looks BEAUTIFUL!. Oh Yeah, the Bimini, Dodger, sailcovers, and brightwork covers are all dark green sunbrella too.

Bill,
I've got an '84 CD27 with an Awlgripped hull, brown bootstripe and Interlux Fiberglass Bottomkote brown bottom. Dodger and main sailcover are tradtional brown.

If you'd like to see a photograph of this scheme, drop me an email. I have many photos I'd be happy to pass along.

Bill,
I've got an '84 CD27 with an Awlgripped hull, brown bootstripe and Interlux Fiberglass Bottomkote brown bottom. Mainsail cover and dodger
are traditional Cape Dory brown. It's a very pleasing and traditional look.

If you'd like a photo of Satu out of the water to drive home this particular scheme, drop me an email with your address.

Good luck !

Bill Goldsmith wrote: Bill, last year we sanded off at least 6 coats of bottom paint from the previous owners and put on Interlux fiberglass bottomkote BRONZE color. The bronze color with the red/maroon boot really looks sharp, but I think keeps the traditional look. Not only in the water, but when we trailer her we always get compliments.

I have a 26 CD and like keeping with tradition; particularly because a Cape Dory IS a traditional vessel! So, my boat has the dark brown boot top and bottom paint. However, I did not like the looks of the drab brown sail cover and dodger (too much brown), so I got a little creative, and replaced them with Sunbrella "linen", which is a lovely, medium beige. I also replaced all running rigging, and got fancy with colored halyards/sheets. Now, I think the boat is still traditional, but distinctive. YOU can't see the bottom paint most of the time anyway. P.S. Shame, shame to Dave. I don't know how many women read this CD website, but I would guess that they would not like the paint comment! Tsk, Tsk....

Bill,
We have a CD 28 that also came with that horrible BROWN. We could not wait to get rid of it. How dull can you make a boat. I can't think of anything more ugly than BROWN on BROWN. A boat should be a thing of beauty.

A traditional boat has dark green top sides with a white boot strip and red bottom paint. My old boat ( not a CD) was painted this color scheme and people would walk down the dock just to look at it.

But you don't have to go as far as to repaint your topsides to improve on the drab brown look.

We repainted our CD with green bottom paint and a burgundy boot strip. We made a new sail cover of burgundy sunbrella.

If I were you I'd go with a red or green bottom. Hech even blue would be better than brown on brown. Then do a contrasting color boot strip.

Good luck, and may the brown be gone.

Tom
