Typhoon inspection

After a long search I think I have found the Ty for me. Upon first glance she looks to be in very good condition. There is no sign of mast compression. I would appreciate comments on any other areas to look at and what else to watch for.

Greetings Jim,
I just bought a 1971 Ty -my first sailboat- and had a professional survey done. The surveyor spent a lot of time looking for moisture in the hull and the deck, esp around the deck fittings. At $12/ft that was money well spent. Unless you know what you are doing, I'd get a survey and follow him/her around the boat. You will learn a lot. Good luck.

I just bought and refinished a 75 weekender. She was neglected for at least two years and not maintained for many before that. I found some wet deck core under the stern deck fittings and the bow cleat. Scraped out and filled with west system, the deck is solid once again. Either those fittings were never bedded or taken off and not rebedded. Check for hull indents along the waterline and signs of trailer damage there and at the bow. There usually is some crazing of the gelcoat around the deck at the cabin, the cleats or comings. These should not be structural, but if there is alot in one place look for a reason like cabin sag, excessive tightening of the fittings etc. Improper loading on a trailer can be tough on the typhoon. Mine has been beaten! But seems to be just fine despite some crazing. We just launcehed her today and she swims easily. A very, very worthwhile upgrade are bronze deadlights from ABI. $100 total for clear glass and interior finish rings. I believe they make the boat look $1000 better! As you can see I am excited that we brought back a lovely boat that sails well. Well worth the money and time. Please email if you have anything you think I can help you with. Good luck.
