She SWIM!, She SWIMS!! But, I still have questions....

Post by D. Stump, Hanalei »

Hanalei was launched 0900 hours Friday past, and all is well. I noticed that the yard yahoo's had a difficult time connecting the aft stay. When they did get it connected, there weren't too many threads into the turnbuckle. The problem is probably in the forestay adjustment, and the question is: How do you adjust the forestay with a Harkin roller furler installed? It's probably simple, and I admit, I haven't even looked at it, but I would appreciate anyone's suggestion or direction on how to adjust it properly.

Thanks for your help.....

Adjusting the Harken is quite simple. The very bottom of the forestay (beneath the drum) will have a lock nut and a threaded stud. loosen the locknut and then adjust the stud to the appropriate length. Be careful not to unscrew it too much or there will not be enough thread engaged to safely carry the load. As I recall there is a mark on the threads that appears if you unscrew it too far. Finally, just re-tighten the lock nut and you're done.

What ever you do with the adjustments I highly recommend that you
attach a forward halyard somewhere up forward as insurance to avoid
unintentionally dropping your mast.
