I bought a 1971 Typhoon that has single speed Gibb winches. How do I take them apart and clean them? Were these the original winches on the boat?

It's quite easy. Just undo the bolt at the top (in the socket). Lift the drum gradually - the pawls will spring out at the base, so keep you hand around the base in case they come off. There is a plastic bearing and various spacers, etc. Make notes as you take it apart, so you can put it back in the same order. Clean everything with a cloth and re-assemble with a light smear of good quality waterproof grease.

Now when you tack, the winches will sing out with a very satisfying note! Enjoy your Typhoon!
