CD-27 Rudder Removal

Post by Ed Rant »

Recently, after hauling my 1981 CD-27, I had thought about removing the rudder to facilitate some repair work on the hull and discovered that the rudder would not lift up high enough to clear the bronze heel fitting that apparently is bonded and/or mechanically fastened to the hull. Is it really necessary to remove this fitting to remove the rudder or is there something I'm overlooking? As it turned out, I was able to carry out the repairs with out the rudder being removed, but for future reference I'd like to know if there is a less drastic way to handle this situation. I was also wondering about the rudder shaft requiring lubrication or should I just let sleeping dogs lie? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I recently had to have the lower gudgen replaced on my 36. It is thru bolted in 5 places thru the keel and then faired in. I don't
think that there is any way to get the rudder out without removing
this gudgen. Happy sailing.
