Transport CD25 versus Sell/reBuy

Post by Don Kolenda »

Relocating from Chicagoland to CapeCoral/Ft.Myers. We own '74 CD25. Key question(s) now are: (1) move boat down there (cost?, how?), (2) is CD25 appropriate for shallow Gulf area?, (3) been thinking of upgrading anyway to CD27 or 28 -- is this the time to do that and by buying more local boat to region am I getting more 'things' setup appropriate to the area then? (by the way, what is a CD270), (4) sell in Chicagoland versus Gulfland versus transport, etc.

And I thought finding (Gulf access)home was the tough part of a transfer!

Hi Don..

If you're seriously thinking of getting a larger boat, sell it at home. Florida boats generally sell for less then in other areas of the country because there's so many there. I bought my boat in Ft. Myers at a third less then the going price in other areas of the country. Be aware that the hot Florida sun works overtime on the
teak and finish of the boat.

Don,

Know your plight first hand!!

I called Joule Yacht Transport in Clearwater, Florida in 1997 about moving my CD27 from Maryland (where she still is) and spoke to Dave Eells (1-800-237-0727) about moving her to St. Pete Beach, Florida where we now live. He quoted $1533 for the job. I had been VERY impressed with their drivers on the Washington, D.C. Beltway (suicide alley) and also along I-95 as I was going back and forth frequently. They always slowed down where there was rough road and gave way to the idiots on the highways.

I found a CD28 down here in St. Petersburg which was under priced according to the BUC book and had more useful accessories than you could shake a stick at already on board. When I considered the price of this boat versus the cost of moving the CD27, the pounding on the road, regardless; the goodies on board, I decided to buy the CD28. Now I did have to put new instruments in, replace a stantion, and on general principles hauled the engine and had it thoroughly checked out -- all to the tune of $8,000 with the bottom job and a couple of gouge repairs in the hull gelcoat. I still believe I came out ahead in purchasing the CD28. I hope the CD27 will sell this spring as I still have slip fees, insurance and the general upkeep to pay for.

I bought my CD28 through St. Petersburg Yacht Charters and Sales who I have found extremely reliable. The owner used to have a CD28 himself and I keep trying to but the half-hull he has on the office wall off of him -- but he won't give it up! He says it was the best boat he ever had and was a great charter boat.

The Florida Mariner (free rag) has CDs frequently in there for sale and most a below northern market prices. As I have been told, but not yet experienced, sell in the north and buy in Florida.

The CD270 was a slightly different 27-footer which was not an Alberg design which came out as I recall in 1984. It had a Westebeke engine, I believe, and a different interior layout. It was slightly beamier than the CD27 and new sold for about $50,000, again as I recall. I remember boarding one at the Annapolis Boat Show and was impressed, but still liked the original 27, but couldn't believe the price!

Warm Regards from St. Pete Beach, FL

Thanks for the great info. I'll be in Cape Coral; found a great home with Gulf Access inlet/canal just north of Tarpon Yacht Harbor. My research is tracking with your comments; that is sell my 25 here in Chicago and buy another. Tell me more about your 27. I'm seriously looking for 27 or 28 to replace our faithful TEMA. And can you comment on the sailing in the shallow Gulf from St. Pete and down?
