Lifting Ring in a Typhoon

Post by John Hitchcock »

I recently purchased a Typhoon and trailer. I noted that there is a ring in the keel accessable through a small hatch in the cabin sole. It looks like it could be used for lifting the boat off the trailer. Is this the case? If it is, what is your experience with this? And do you know where I can get a schematic of the harness (I assume I will need one) used for this purpose?

Negative on lifting the boat with this ring. The ring was orginally used to lower the lead keel into the boat during manufacture.

As Dana mentioned this ring is used to suppend the lead it keel during manufacture. The boat must be lifted with the slings under the keel or near by. Do not use the deck cleats either unless you want another repair. Consult the owners manual if all else fails.
Many happy repairs.

NOW you tell me that it is not a lifting ring!<G> Actually, I have had the boat lifted with this ring several times without problem as this ring is at the center of gravity or VERY close. I have found that a better way of lifting (if slings are impractical) is to take a 30" or so 4x4 or 6x6 (or laminated 2x6's). Affix blocks to either end and a chain in the middle. Place it in the companionway with blocks...padded hopefully...against the top of the cabin. Then carefully adjust to the balance point and lift away! I used this rig during my Typhoon restoration to take the boat on and off the trailer from a chain hoist in my reinforced workshop! No stress or strain evident whatsoever....but as with ANY lifting, do NOT get under it!
