CD-27 Draft 4' or 4'4" ?

Post by Jim Taylor »

I'm very interested in buying a CD-27. The two boats that I have looked at so far seem to have a draft of about 4'4" based on scum line. I do not have the impression that they carried a lot of equipement. The specifications state a draft of 4'0".

Is it typical of CD-27's to draw over 4'?

Thanks,
Jim

Jim,

I have a CD27 and I loaded it down with a lot of "extra" gear from anchors, chain, bottles of engine oil, etc. and although I never got under her with a measuring device, by guideline of the red bootstripe at the waterline, I never saw much change unless I got a lot of water in the bilge. This doesn't mean that she took in a lot of water, but when I would wash out the bilge (not from oil leaks, etc. from the engine) and load a lot of water in there, she would go down maybe 2-inches max.

I always believed the Owner's Manual which stated 4-feet and I think this is so.

Now, I have no idea where you are sailing, but from my experience on the Chesepeake Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, 4-inches are NOT going to make a hill of beans!!!! Depending on the moon phase the tides are of differing heights and the winds from a far off as well as local winds can affect you flotation level. I used to sail on the Finger Lakes in upstate New York, but with Sun Fish type boats where the daggerboard made adjustment easy, but wind effects still had to be similar there.

The other thing is, regardless of how good a sailor you are or how experienced you are, you have and you will run aground! Usually from some stupid, careless error, but it happens! Just try to do it where there aren't rocks or coral as they tend to have more serious effects!
