I think it is technically called a HIN Hull Identification Number. If you're lucky you can have up to 3 ID numbers on your boat. The HIN put there by the builder, the State registration number to send money to your state government's coffers, and a documentation number issued by the Coast Guard. Actually I guess you might even have a fourth, the racing number on your sail. Anyone got all his ID numbers memorized??

Steve,
This twelve (12) alphanumeric combination is a federally required HIN or Hull Identification Number which must be placed on all vessels, whether factory or home-made.

The first three (3) letters identify the manufacturer and in this case the CPD identifies it as a Cape Dory. Usually this is followed by ONE or TWO MORE LETTER(S) which identifies the model as listed with the federal government. Then follows a series of digits which identifies the hull number, in this case Hull No. 15. Next follows a letter which I can't remember what it means and then the model year and month in which the keel was laid (pretty quick with fiberglass boats!). Looks like January, 1989 in your case. Early on the letters A-M without an "I" which might be confused with a "one" were used. for the last alphanumeric device.

You might look up on the "web" an see if more data is available on the HIN.

Federally Documented Vessels must meet certain federal weight capacity requirements and then will be issued a documentation number which is formated: U.S.000000 Net 0 The documented number must be engraved or otherwise permanently fixed to the hull inside. These boats must have the name and hailing port affixed to the stern. The hailing port can either be the residence location or the U.S. Coast Guard District in which the boat is registered. This is a unique name and hailing port combination to identify the vessel. There are no numbers on these boats otherwise. Individual states however, will generally require payment of some type of registration fee and display a decal on the forward half of the vessel and a portlight mounting is generally permissible.

If your boat isn't Documented, you will have an certificate of registration number from the state in which the boat spends the majority of its time which must be permanently placed on the forward half of the hull in 3-inch letters. The first two (2) letters identifies the state. Then there are four (4) numbers and then two (2) letters. In your case the first two (2) letters would be CT. The separation by the WIDTH of a number "1" or by use of a hyphen (-) between the three (3) alphabetic-number-alphabetic groups is important to be in compliance with the law.

Hope I didn't give you too much, but thought if others read this they will be advised.

home built boats are not required to have a HIN. i built a 19 footer prior to my cd 26 and was able to get registered without it. the state sent a game warden out to confirm that the boat was homebuilt.

John,

Quoting from the DOT/USCG on-line R&Rs. "Recreational Boats sold or imported into the United States are required to have a twelve character Hull Identification Number (HIN). THe first three letters of that number are the Manufacturer's Identification Code (MIC). Manufacturers are required to apply in writing to the United States Coast Guard for assignment of a MIC. ..... For backyard boatbuilders who build their own boats (not for sale), the Coast Guard assigned a MIC to each state or territory. Such MICs always end in a Z. The State then assigns the HIN for that boat. For example if a boat has an HIN beginning with VAZ, it is a back yard built boat, with a HIN assigned by the state of Virginia. An HIN beginning with HQZ was assigned by Coast Guard Headquarters. However, the Coast Guard rarely assigns HINs and then only under unusual circumstances..."

Guess your Game Warden didn't do his whole job!

Thought you'd like to know!!
